(NC) Free Catholic Litera

of India’s most urgent needs,
because “while America is

Russia is feeding its head and

of a Catholic monthly here.
Father Joseph Mavunkal, who

is greatly handicapped by the
fact that it has no printing press

Pope Pius XII is a true Ro
man, although a noble one
This is shown clearly in many
of his personal traits
Perhaps the most obvious
example of his typically Ro
man personality is his tender
love of animals. Another, ac
cording to those who know
him best, is his informal con
versations. which reveal his
delight in using ordinary Roman
phrases.
In his love for animals, how
ever, the Pope’s character diverg
es in what might be called an
Assisian direction from the Rom
an norm. For while most Romans
are notorious lovers of cats, the
favorite pets of the Pone, like
St Francis, are bird* And his
pleasure nn seeing gamboling
lamhs is immediately apparent
Whether he is in the city at
the Vatican Palace or at Castel
gandolfo, there are always
birds in the Pope's private
apartments. Often during the
day he opens the doors of their
cages and allows them to fly
freely about the rooms.
Italian publications never write
about the Holy Father’s private
life without commenting upon his
birds “The noisiest one of
all,’’ writes the magazine Opg?
“is called ‘Dompaff’ The
most lively and pretty is ‘Gret
chen’.”
Even L’Unita. the official pa
per of the Communist Party in
Italy, has referred to the papal
birds. Ever ready with a
caustic comment, the Red organ
once complained about the num
ber of Germans attached to the
Pope’s household and added bit
terly “that Niehelung Ring” even
the canaries are German Aside
from other implications, this of
course took no note of the fact
that canaries from
Harz Mountains have
brated for centuries.
