Pope Urges Business Owners
To Build Good Labor Relations
VATIC AN CITY (NC) His Holiness Pope Pius
XII reminded the owners of small industrial concerns of
their personal responsibilities in maintaining good labor
relations and called upon them to demonstrate a desire for
“true social progress.”
The Pope made these remarks to delegates of the First
National Congress of Small In
dustry. representing more than
70.000 such concerns in Italy.
“Good will certainly is not lack
ing in many, but at times it must
be observed that excessive at
tachment to economic advantages
obscures in a more or less exten
sive manner a perception of im
balance and injustice in certain
living conditions,” the Holy Fa
ther said.
The Pontiff pointed out that
the success of small private enter
prises depends to a large extent
on the loyal collaboration of
workers. The determining factor
in this respect is the owner him
self. because on him depends in
the first place the spirit animat
ing his employees, the Pope said.
“If workers note in their boss
^willingness to place general in
terest above individual advantage
it will be much easier to main
tain the workers’ loval disposi
tion.”
He warned against a false
interpretation of the term "pri
vate enterprise" as it were to
mean that its organization and
PORTSMOUTH "E
GLASS
activity were left entirely with
in the discretion of the owner
and serving only his personal
interests. The Holy Father said
the conduct of private enter
prises and small industries
must be conceived in terms of
a national community toward
which private enterprises have
right* and duties.
The Pope stressed the need of
the owner to be a true “head of
the business” who must know how
to deal with practical as well as
human problems. “This requires,
together with various intellectual
qualities, a strong character and
above all a broad and generous
moral sense,” he said.

OKLAHOMA CITY (NC)
‘Operation Understand
ing” has been launched in
the Oklahoma City-Tulsa dio
cese by Bishop Eugene J.
McGuinness.
The Bishop’s plan is to ac
quaint all Oklahomans with
the Catholic Church. Specif
ically, this will be done at an
open house to be held March
4. when more than two million
non-Catholics of Oklahoma will be
invited to visit any Catholic
church in Oklahoma.
At the open house, non-Ca
tholics will be taken on a tour
of the churches and all articles
and sacramentals used in Catho
lic worship will be explained to
them. Among these will be the
baptismal fonts, confessionals,
Stations of the Cross, statues,
altars, linens and vestments. It
will be a “Get-Acquainted Day"
with the Catholic Church for all
interested non Catholics.
Purpose of the plan is to give
the non-Catholics of Oklahoma
(approximately 97 per cent of the
population) a better understand
ing of Catholics and the Church,
thus the name “Operation Under
standing.” Bishop McGuinness
wants those outside the Faith to
become better acquainted with the
beliefs and practices of the Ca
tholic Church.
Several thousand Catholic men
and women will call on every
home in Oklahoma in advance, is
suing an invitation to visit the
nearest Catholic church on that
day.
