pledged himself to conduct
his government in accord
with Christian principles,
particularly in the social
field. He said that he con
sidered the blessing received
from His Holiness Pope Pius
XII for Brazil and himself
the most certain pr mise of peace
and tranquility.
President Kubitschek spoke
here at a reception in the Bra
zilian embassy to the Holy See
which was attended by nine Card
inals. the ranking prelates of the
Vatican Secretariate ot State and
members of the diplomatic corps.
In welcoming his guests, he
told them he was “overcome with
deep emotion” by his earlier aud
ience with the Holv Father.
Born and educa.ed in a fun
damentally Catholic country,
the President-elect said, he
could fathom the deep spiritual
significance of his visit to the
Pope, and the Pontiff's pefer
nel interest in Brazil, "which is
today among the world's great
est Catholic countries."
The President-elect said that,
in the presence of the highest
Vatican authorities, he wished to
reaffirm his resolution to give to
the Church the most sincere dem
onstration of his filial affection
and of his profoun-l respect He

Report Indicates Argentine
Economy Close to Disaster
BUENOS AIRES (NC) The Argentine people got another jolting reminder of
the effects of the Peron dictatorship with the release of a report describing Argentina's
economic situation as being on the brink of disaster.
The report, prepared by Dr. Raul Prebisch, economic adviser of the provisional
government, said that during the past ten years the per capita output has been at a virtual

Despite the fact that the
Christian Democratic Party de

individuals—the rally has been
heartening to the anti-peronist
forces. There have been signs
of renewed underground peron
ist activity, with increased per
onist radio propaganda coming
out of Paraguay. But the show
of solidarity has given the anti
peronists a shot In the arm.
The Christian Democrats re
portedly remained aloof from the
“Meeting of the Republic” on
grounds that it was too reminis
cent of the rallies staged by the
Peron government in the past.
In addition, many Catholics ab
sented themselves because of the
anti-clerical leanings of the tra
ditional parties As a result of
this so-called European liberal
tendency, the divorce law and the
law suppressing religious educa
tion in the public schools passed
by Peron during the religious per
secution are not now' likely to be
repealed.
