Cord Binding Jesus The cohort therefore and the tribune and the attendants of the Jews seized Jesus and bound Him.—John 18, 12. By Bertrand J. Gulnerich How many of you have ever read the meditations of St. AJphonsus de Liguori on the Passion and death of Christ? I would have you read well these words he pens about this moment in the Passion: Ah me! what do I see?! A God bound! By whom? By men by worms created by Himself. Angels of paradise, what say ye to it? And Thou, my Jesus, why dost Thou allow Thy self to be bound? What, says St. Bernard, have the bonds of slaves, and of the guilty to do with Thee, who art the Holy of Holies, the King of Kings, and Lord of Lords? But if men bind Thee, wherefore dost Thou not loosen and free Thyself from the torments and death which they are preparing for Thee? But I understand this. It is not, O my Lord, these ropes which bind Thee. It is only iove which keeps Thee bound, and constrains Thee to suffer and die for us.” Indeed, St. Laurence Justin ien well exclaims, "O Charity, how strong is Thy chain, by which God was able to be bound!" We can hang our heads in shame at the sight of our God thus bound end led away at the head of the rabble. At tho same time should there not be found in our hearts a surge A spokesman of Mr. Beligama’s party said later that it was their view that “just assistance” should be extended to other faiths even after Buddhism was recognized as the national religion. Mr. Beligama’s move is regard ed as an off-shoot of the dilly dallying with Buddhism which has been a feature of government policy in Ceylon in the past months. Highlights of this policy were the printing at government ex pense of 700.000 booklets on Buddhism Io be distributed to Buddhist children in public schools, the establishment of a Our 32nd Year Giving Columbus People The Deal They Want o k s 555 W. Is our love strong enough to weather such a trial? Would we be ready and willing to join the ranks of the modern-day mar tyrs out of love for God? How strong is your love, even, in these days of the holy season of Lent? Let us lift our hands aloft to the Son of God and beseech Him to bind »hem with great love for Him, that they may not wander astray in search of things dis pleasing to Hirn. With David we pray, “Have mercy on me, O God. have mercy on me: for my aoul trusteth in thee. And in the shadow of thy wings will I hope, until iniquity pass away.”—P». 56. Buddhists in Ceylon Move Against Church COLOMBO, Ceylon (NC) The Ceylon government’s open collaboration with Buddhism has encouraged the launching of new att empts to declare the country an of ficial Buddhist state. I The national parliamentlis scheduled to discuss a non official motion proposing that Buddhism be proclaimed the state religion. The motion has come from an opposition mem ber, C. R. Beligama who urged the government to take action “without prejudice to other relig ions.” Buddhist wing at the Ceylon uni versity, and the launching of what has been described as a se cret plan to convert the country’s public schools into Buddhist re ligious institutions. Of greater concern to Cath olics was the government's al location of $1,000,000 to cele brate the 2,500th anniversary of the birth of tho Buddha. With the effoJs at bolstering Buddhism came attempts to criti cize the Catholic religion and to stifle and hamper the working of Catholic Church institutions in this country. The education department opened a campaign against Catholic schools by denying them permits for essential de velopment. New applications were systematically u n e down. Unofficially, the campaign was fostered by mobs of fanatic Buddhists who desecrated and even destroyed Catholic church es. They questioned the right of the Catholic minority to build churches in places of their choice. An official meeting of Catho lics urged the government to halt the menace posed by these devel opments. o-------------------- Belgian Jesuit Invited To Teach at Iowa Univ. IOWA cm la. It was actually a story of two rogues not one. steward, when he discovered that his crooked dealings were found out by the master, said “to dig he was unable and to beg he was ashamed.” So he decided to defraud the master a little more. He called in all those who owed his mas ter debts and reduced one debt 50 percent, and another 30 percent. His master found it out and commended him for his “cleverness”. Our Lore did not commend him. as some think. Our Lord now drew this mor al: “The children of this world are more prudent after their own fashion than the children of light.” In other words, busi ness men who live only for this world are wiser than those who have faith and who are supposed to live for the next world. The steward and the master loved money and they used it well from the stand point of this world. The par able was a rebuke to us for not showing more acumen as regards eternal things. Our Lord now proceeds to tell us how to make use of mon ey. My counsel to vou is, “Make use of your base wealth to win yourselves friends, who when you leave it behind will wel come you into eternal habita tions.” Money, in other words, is an instrument for good or for evil. Nothing reveals the thinking of a person more than his attitude toward money. Our Lord says, use it to make friends. Help the refugees from Vietnam help the Indians build a chapel re GOTTARDI. Then when you die they will be ybur intercessors—they will plead for you on the day of Judgment. The Missions will rise up in your defense. If I had your bank book, I would have one-half of your prayers answered!” GOD LOVE YOU to A.J.Y. “There is nothing I enjoy more than sitting down after dinner and smoking a good ten cent cigar.
