Alter of Cincinnati this week urged Catholic thinkers to break out of their “charmed circle” and “introduce the Thomist or Neo-Scholastic system of thought” into secular universities. Later at the same meeting, Dr. Mortimer J. Adler, famed non-Catholic authority on the philosophy of St. Thomas, gave some hints on how this could be done. "You know that the course of human history in the coming gen erations will be determined in large part by the articulate thinking which is being done to day in our great universities,’’ the Archbishop said. "At th* tame time we all rec ognize that non* of us her* could subscribe to th* philo sophical systems which ar* cur rent in these universities to day. “Our own efforts in the limit ed area of the Catholic college.” he continued, "and our own iso lation from the gre«u body of in tellectual leaders seem to offer little hope to influence effective ly the course of future events.” If Catholic philosophers "in sufficient numbers" joined th* faculties of seculzr universi ties, "the intimate personal contact with other faculty members both on and off th* campus would, I am confident, do much to ventilate the stuffy atmosphere and self-complac ency on many a campus," the Archbishop said. “There are many difficulties.” he went on. “but it seems to me that we must break out of our own charmed circle and estab lish a wider contact with the philosophia perennis. We need men bike Christopher Dawson, Jacques Maritain. Etienne Gilson. Father John Courtney Murray and Dr. Mortimer Adler to illus trate the fact that our philoso phy is not a steiile, antiquated concern only with the problems of past ages, but rathei with the problems of the living present.” Observing that “in the popular mind or to the superficial observ er” the contribution ot philoso phers to the public welfare might be "dismissed as irrelevant or in significant.” the Archbishop con tinued: "No greater mistake could be made. Ultimate truth is su premely important in any ag*. Crooked principles lead to crooked action and th* con verse is equally true." In another talk, Dr. Adler as serted that philosophers are for ever disagreeing with one an other, yet very little true contro versy takes place among them. Dr. Adler, who is associated with the Institute for Philo sophical Research, called con troversy "essential to th* philo HAYDOCY PONTIAC, INC. Columbus' Newest Pontiac Dealer 500 W. However, the way in which philosophers differ, without clearly agreeing or disagreeing in an objective manner, and without achieving a decent measure of rational debate, is and has long been a public scandal." Because the men who seem to disagree fail to make sure that both are considering the same subject and that both understand the questions the same way, "what occurs every day among philosophers is a counterfeit of genuine disagreement.” he said. Dr. Adler cited the opinion of Catholic philosopher Jacques Maritain that only through the medium of "neutral construc tions" can philosophers be brought into agreement or dis agreement. Without it each re mains in the world of his own thought. At the concluding session. Fa ther George P.
