He was baptised a Catholic on Oct. 4, 1942, at St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth. Elected to the three-member Springs Senior Receives $500 Scholarship Award A St. Mary’s of the Springs Academy senior was awarded a five hundred dollar annual scholarship it was announced this week. Kathleen Hayes, daughter of Mr. and MTs. Henry C. Hayes of St. Catharine parish, Columbus, was awarded a five hundred dollar scholarship by St. Mary’s college, Notre Dame, Indiana. He called on American Cath olics, as individuals and In or ganizations, to aid the work of the Russian Center at Fordham University In New York City. This center, he explained, is helping to train priests and sisters for service in Russia, and to prepare Catechisms end other Roman Catholic printed material in the Rus sian language. “Our vital job right now,’’ he continued. “Is to explain to Ro man Catholics the tremendous importance of making adequate preparations for the time when we can reunite with our separat ed brethren in Russia. -----------------o-----------------• ST. Cushing told a veteran’s organi zation at a rally on historic Bos ton Common. Loyalty, the Arch bishop said, “is a question of jus tice ... it involves relations with others, obligations to persons, places or things outside one’s self.” Americans should be loyal to their family, their government on both the local and national lev els, and above all else to God, Archbishop Cushing told the La dies’ Auxiliary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. While we should have “a pas sionate loyalty to the nation and to the way of life which is the heart of its heritage,” the Arch bishop said, “. We cannot sub scribe to the position: 'My coun try right or wrong’. We must al ways say: ‘My country: when it is right, I must help keep it so when it is wrong, I must help to make it right’.” There are only about 20,000 “full-grown Communists” in the U.S. at the present time. The four-line resolution would establish as the official motto the phbase which has appeared for many years on coins and which must i.ow appear on all currency under a law enacted last year.
