West Broad street. This year's committee will be Vermont Court Tuition Battle MONTPELIER, Vt. (NC) A petition filed in the Ver mont Supreme Court here by the state attorney general questions the constitutional ity of paying public tax mon ies to sectarian schools. The petition was filed on behalf of the State Board of Education and signed by At torney General Robert T. Stafford of Rutland, his dep uty, Frederick M. Reed, and six of the seven members of the board. The controversy originated in South Burlington. That city was hardest hit of more than 90 Ver mont communities which had a total of nearly $20,000 deducted from state aid checks last De cember. This occurred when the state ruled it had no authority to make payments on behalf of students whose tuition as private and parochial schools was being paid with public funds. The state petition says the board of education is not author tied under the school aid law, nor under the lawtf and consti tutions of both the United States and Vermont, to provide aid for students who attend sectarian secondary schools. This position’s contested by the South Burlington school board and its attorney, Frederick J. Fayette, who insist that state law does not make this distinction and that the law is intended to I include tuition for pupils sent Ito parochial schools. The six were married in one ceremony in St. Mary’s Church here. Tha four daughter* and two sons of Mr. Dorssers, who is the father of 15 children, were greeted by almost the entire town population of 2,800 after their marriages. Father Willi brord, O.F.M., Cap., offered a Nuptial Mass for the Nix coup- The Blenheim town council gave the newlyweds a gift of six steam irons and most of the town joined in a 12-hour reception for them after a horn-blowing parade of cars through the town, which displayed colored lights and oth er decorations. The complicated arrange ments for the wedding, which nevertheless produced a smooth ly conducted ceremony, were the result of a good natured plea by Mr. Dorssers. He had insisted that" his farm chores didn't give him time "to run from one wedding to another ail spring long." Rabbi Opposes Efforts For Religion in Schools NEWARK, N.J. (NC)—Work to get religion in the public schools was called a “menacing effort” by Rabbi Ely E. Pilchik of Temple B’Nai Jeshurun here, in an address at the first bien nial conference of the New Jer sey Council, Union of American Hebrew Congregations. Speaking on “Religion and the Public Schools,” Rabbi Pilchik declared the “menacing effort to inject religion into the Amer ican public schools is not a threat to the Jew alone. It is a threat to the whole democratic experi ment and to the intellectual and spiritual growth of man.” If you seek Jesus without Mary, you will seek Him in vain.—St Bonaventure (1221-1274). eM 2o With SANITONE DRY CLEANING like-new beauty of fabric is fully restored Your garments are really more than just cleaned after receiv ing thorough Sanitone Dry Cleaning in our plant. Paper Scores Mayor For Racial Ban The criticism of the munici pal policy came from The Mich igan Catholic, newspaper of the Detroit archdiocese. In an edi torial which did not name the suburb or the mayor, the pa per declared: “Any public official boasts of his success in flouting the law pleads guilty to grave wrongdoing and to a scandalous violation of his oath of office. When the same official defends his position by boasting that his repeated re-election to office proves that his racial housing policy has the approval of the voters, he may indeed be stating a fact. But it is a fact that re flects little credit upon the Amer ican or the Christian spirit of his supporters. "Having stated the above view, which in our opinion is the only one consistent with Catholic doctrine, let us hasten to add that this does not mean we favor the overcrowding of houses, the deterioration of residential neighborhoods or the creation of new Colored slums. The newspaper cited among causes that have made Negroes “unwelcome neighbors are their deprivation of equal education al, religious and employment op portunities, and their confine ment in poverty-stricken ghet toes that are breeding places of lawlessness and crime.” The editorial urged Negro home owners to make them selves more desirable as neigh bors by "strenuous efforts to repress those traits and those individuals among their own numbers whose wrongful con duct is so often seized upon by many whites as justification of anti-Negro prejudice."
