N.D. Professor Explains Lack of U.S. Physicists CINCINNATI (NC) The reason the United States lacks the theoretical physicists neces sary for atomic research is large ly the pragmatic spirit of the na tion, Dr. Vincent E. Smith, pro fessor of philosophy at the Uni versity of Notir Dame, declared in addressing the annual awards convocation at Xavier University. Dr. Smith, a graduate of Xav ier, received the university's 125th anniversary citation award from Father Paul L. O'Connor, S.J., president of Xavier, for his contribution to the study of phil osophy. Nearly every leading idea in 20th century physics bears a European dateline, Dr. Smith said. "If America has been short-changed in theoretical scientists, surely a large share of the blame is the pragmatic method which has come to be a criterion of truth not merely in the work-a-day world but even in our intellectual cul ture." The shortage of theoretical physicists will not be relieved by m?rely offering more and even better science courses, he em phasized. The student needs a liberal arts training, “arts be cause they involve a construction by human reason and liberal be cause they enable the mind, like a*free man, to operate for its own of proper good, the possession truth,” Dr. Smith stated. ———0-—------------- Reds Pressuring, Polish Refugees In Connecticut HARTFORD, Conn.
