down on three hits and struck out
14 in gaining the decision.
The winners scored first in the
second inning when center field
er Tom Hoffman reached first
on a single, stole second and
third and came in on an over
throw to third base on the steal
attempt. St. Charles added two
more runs in the top of the
eighth when a single by Duane
Davies, two sacrifices, an error
and a perfect squeeze play by
shortstop Mike McDonald brought
home the two counters.
North got its only run in the
bottom of the ninth after threat
ening in the seventh when first
baseman George Walker led off
with a triple only to see the next
three men go down. Catcher Lar
ry Sopko led the Cards at bat
with two hits in four trips
plate.

Pope Says
VATICAN CITY (NC)—Par
ticipation in sports and training
for sports can be a school of vir
tue, if properly directed, His Ho
liness Pope Pius XII told the
coaches and members of the
“Athletic” soccer team of Bilboa,
Spain.
The Holy Father noted that
this was not the first time that he
had addressed a sports group,
because “the doors of this house
are open to everyone and even
more so this, your father’s heart.”
The Pontiff praised the Span
ish team he was addressing. The
team, he pointed out, was widely
known not only because it excels
in sports but also because it
strives to develop team members’
spiritual life. Today, he said, they
may meet for a training session
or a game, tomorrow they will
meet for a spiritual retreat.
“Sports activities,’’ the Pope
declared, “can be a school of vir
tue. The individuals striving for
improvement often require a
great deal of persistence, much
sacrifice, much interior prepara
tion and much humility both in
learning and assimilating instruc
tions.”

a regular International League game. Proceeds from the
sale of tickets to the game go to the two diocesan youth
