Co-captain Jerry Ward, 228 pound senior guard from Cleve land, Ohio, ran into scholastic difficulties in summer school and failed to come up with a high enough point average to remain eligible for varsity competition. Ward had been a standout for the Flyers for two seasons playing both middle of the defensive line and switching to lin.’backer when needed. His loss means the Fly ers will be ifld on the field by co captain Billy (The Blur) Smith, Dayton’s 164-pound pocket rocket halfback from Hamilton, Ohio. The crown marked the eighth time in the nine year existence of the league that St. Charles has won. In Officials of the Mid-Winter Sports Association, which oper ates the Sugar Bowl games, said that the withdrawals of Notre Dame, St. Louis and Dayton uni versities probably means that there will be no basketball tourn ament this year. In their withdrawals from the tournament, the three universi ties made it clear that their ath letic teams represent the entire student bodies of their schools, which include Negroes. They add ed that any student is eligible to participate in athletics and will not be kept off the team because of race. The schools added that their policies do not recognize ra cial segregation. National Collegiate Athletic Association rules limit college and university teams to 26 games and, since schedules for the coming basketball season already have been completed, It appears next to Impossible to get major teams for the tournament, oven If they were willing to play undor segregat ed conditions. The new law may similarly af fect track, boxing, and other competition in the Sugar Bowl classic. The annual football game will be held New Year’s Day, but the caliber of competition may likewise suffer. Religious gatherings are spe cifically excluded from the bill which, was signed into law by Gov. Earl K. Ixmg. The text of the law follows: *AN ACT to prohibit all In terracial dancing, social func tions, entertainments, athletic treinlng, gemes, sports or con tests and other such activities! to provide for separate seating and other facilities for Whites and Negroes to provide penal ties for the violation of this Act, and to repeal all laws or Detroit Tigers Sign High School Pitching Star MONROE, Mich., (NO—Dick Vigliotti, Catholic Central pitch ing star for three years, has signed a Detroit Tiger baseball contract. He will report to Tiger town camp in Lakeland, Fla. next March. The youth won 18 games for the high school team and pitched his club to a pair of Southeastern Michigan Conference baseball championships.
