movie joy
comes from
the Spirit IN
SIDE us. The
secret of joy
is:—
God first
Others next
Self lest
The world
reverse, that
order and puts self first. In
terms of personal pronouns it
is "I", "We," and "They." But
for the Christian, the key to
real happiness is "otherism"
such as a mother has for her
child, a groom for his bride, a
great soldier for his country
and a saint for His God. On the
contrary, “a man wrapped up
in himself makes a very small
package."
Joy never comes to those
who seek it directly it comes
only in the hour of self-forget
fulness when we are touched
by another’s need. In self-sac
rificing service for other we
see the marks of Our Lord's
sandals, follow His steps and
share His Joy.
Now for the application.
Since joy is founded on “other
ism," end since there is no
form of “otherness" more no
ble than making the name of
Christ known and loved in pa
gan lands, and more sublime
than caring for the lepers and
poor in His name, do the fol
lowing each day:—
1. Make a tiny little sacri
fice, e.g. not buying a paper,
or doing without a soda or a
package of gum.
2. As you deny yourself say:

-----------God Love You-----------
You Can Have Joy
By Following a Formula
by Bishop Fulton J. Sheen
Pagans want a life of pleas
ure Christians want a life of
joy. Pleasure comes through
something OUTSIDE us, like
"I do this out of leva for Thee,
O Lord."
3. At the end of the month
send your sacrifices to us and
we will send them to the Holy
Father for ell the Missions of
the World.
Then you will come to know
the joy spoken of by Our Lord:
"All this have I told you so that
My joy may be yours."
GOD LOVE YOU to M.M. “I
am enclosing $6.00 for the Mis
sions which is the equivalent of
the price I paid for 'a prized
record album ... to M. A. S.
and M.M.S. “Enclosed please
find $1,000 for the Holy Fa
ther’s Missions.”
God first, others next, self
last when you SACRIFICE
for the Holy Father's Missions
you bring Christ the Per
fect Joy to countless OTH
ERS. You can learn how your
sacrifice helps others and also
what further aid is needed in
pagan countries by reading the
bi-monthly publication MIS
SION. This magazine is edited
by the Most Rev. Fulton J.
Sheen and contains articles
and anecdotes, pictures and
cartoons describing the work
of the Propagation of the Faith
in the five continents of the
world. When you send us your
sacrifice for the poor of the
world, ask that your name bo
included on the MISSION mail
ing list. We will be happy to
send it to you.
Cut out this column, pin your
sacrifice to it and mail it to

Catholic Music
Used Most
Bv Protestants
NEW YORK Great Catholic
music is being written, published
and performed, a music critic de
clared here. He added, however,
that he finds that most of it is
being used in the Protestant
churches.
Speaking on “The Catholic
Hour’’ radio program. Paul Hume,
music critic of the Washington
Post and Times Herald, said “I
wish that the superb Masses I
have heard in the course of my
duties as a music critic in Wash
ington had been sung in Catholic
Churches.”
"Unfortunately," he added,
"they were, without excep
tion, giver. in Protestant
churches where the treasure
of Catholic music seems to be
more highly regarded."
“The Catholic Hour’’ is heard
on Sunday from 2:30-3 pm, EST,
over WLW Radio. It is produced
by the National Council of Ca
tholic Men.
Mr. Hume called the non-use
of good music in Catholic church
es “an unhappy situation.” He
said Catholics should not permit
it to continue.
