The government asked the state Supremo Court to reverse a ruling that exempted St. Joseph's consent of Saugor from the provisions of the Madhya Pradesh Public Trust Xct The act demands that all Catholic institutions be registered as pub lic trust. In India public trusts are government administered. This means that if the trusts act is enforced, Catholic institutions will be under control of the government. The Madhya Pradesh govern ment calked the Supreme Court exemption ruling an “illegal, un just and most improper miscar riage of justice.” The exemption was granted on the basis of argu ments presented by convent authorities. They said that the convent was a voluntary union of pious women who had pool ed their educational and finan cial resources to conduct a school for Indian children. The registrar nf public trusts of Saugor backed the nuns. He said their free association ex cluded them from jurisdiction of the Public Trust acl, even though the purpose of their association was public good. PAINTING Inside and Out Steaming off paper.
