As I followed him to the altar 1 noticed that he was clutching something in his fist It turned out to be a coin, which he dropped into the box. He picked out a votive candle, lighted it. and knelt down. 1 knelt down, too, about a yard away. He soon noticed me, but at first he kept his eyes on the altar. A few minutes later he leaned over, and in a resentful whisper said, "You move over, pray on your own candle.” —Catholic Digest—August -----------------o............ Timas CliMifiedt gat results. As promotion and publicity di rector for the San Francisco Seals, in the Pacific Coast League, Mails spends seven days a week and many hours talking to groups all over Northern California about the game he loves—base ball. It is an ideal job for a man who spent many illustrious years in the game. “It’s a wonderful job for me,” said Mails. "Last year I had a clinic for all the coaches from colleges right down to the little leagues. Other activities that keep me busy include our Knot hole Club, here in Frisco, which has grown by leaps and bounds promoting families and children to come to the games, and pro moting our players in every way, shape, and form not only for the city of San Francisco but for the surrounding area.” Asked whether he ever gets the urge to throw the ball again, Mails replied: “I’d love to see that day of 1920 again when I was on the mound for the Indians during the World Series pitching 16 and two-thirds innings without being scored on. That was a real thrill in my life.” That World Series game against the Dodgers was particu larly important tb Mails because he was a former Dodger castoff. The 60-year-old ace recalled the days when a left-handed play er often gave the fans a real treat, a far cry from the left handers of today. “That’s one trouble with base hall today,” he said. "All the left handers are starting tn think. In NEW SYSTEM BAKERY BUCKEYE LAKE CLASSIFIED SECTION COMPLETE DRIVING COURSE We pick you up at your home and take you back. Va Nov. 2—at Linden Nov. 9—Eastmoor (All home games at Jones Field, 3800 Groveport Pike) the early days baseball had many characters and the characters were all left-handed players.” One of Mails’ best stories about himself concerns the time, when he was pitching for the Indians against the New York Yankees. It was the eighth inning, the bas es were loaded, and the Yankees were at bat. Mails was in the bullpen eating a hot-dog when the Indian coach approached him. “You, Mails,” the coach sig nalled. “Whatta ya want?” said Mails. "Get up on the mound,” the coach replied. "How many out?" Mails asked. "Nobody,” said the coach. “How many on?” Mails asked, taking a bite from his hot-dog. "Three,” was the reply. "Who’s coming up?” Mails then asked. “Gehrig, Meusel and Ruth,” an swered the coach. Mails’ jaw dropped, hot-dog still in his hand. He turned to the pitcher next to him in the bull pen and said: "Here, hold this, I’ll be back in a minute.” TERGO WHITE LUSTRE ROSE Chemical Products MARION S A V E ON AUTO INSURANCE Those business firms deserve your patronage.
