The Columbus grade school football program gets under way Saturday when the ‘weighing in’ process be gins for all teams in the leagues. Irish Start Sixty Eisihth Football Year NOTRE DAME, Ind—Prepara tions for the 68th football season nf the University of Notre Dame began last Saturday, when Coach Terry Brennan greeted upwards of 76 candidates at the first prac tice session. Preceding the Sept 1 opening was a “picture day” session, Friday, Aug. 31, strictly for the benefit of photographers. Coach Brennan will be starting his third season as director of the Fighting Irish football destinies In his first two campaigns, his charges compiled the very fine record of 17 wins and only three defeats. Over the years, in 67 sea sons. the Notre Dame record shows 432 victories, 88 defeats and 34 ties. As he sounds his opening roll call. Brennan will find that eight regulars and 17 monogram win ners from the 1955 team have de parted via graduation, and that three first stringers and 14 mon ogram men are among his re turnees. The 1955 eleven won eight and lost two games. o------------------- Indiana Athletes Join Olympians INDIANAPOLIS (NC)—Two Indianapolis Catholic high school pupils and a third who was grad uated in June are members of the U.S. learn which will compete in the Olympic Games in Melbourne, Australia, next November. At the Olympic tryouts in De troit. Frank McKinney, jr., a sen ior at Cathedral High School, and Mary Ann Marchino, a June grad uate of St. Agnes Academy, made the swimming team. The season will get under w^y during the week of Sept. 23 al though two of the teams will have the opportunity nf jumping the gun in the first regularly sched uled game on Sept. 16 at the Chillicothe Veterans Memorial Stadium. Connolly, who won All-Catholic All-America Coach of the Year honors in 1955 as he guided the Musketeers to a 7-2 record in his first season, faces the problem of molding an inexperienced squad into a pigskin machine in just two weeks. Xavier opens its chal lenging 10-game schedule against St. Joseph of Indiana on Sunday night, Sept. 16, in Xavier Stadi um. Following the inaugural, Xav ier has consecutive Saturday en gagements with Marshall, Miami, Ohio U., Cincinnati. Quantico Ma rines, Dayton. Colorado A. & M., Louisville and Kentucky.
