All squads will be shooting for the mythical Diocesan champion ship won the past season by New ark St. Francis and shared in 1954 by the Green Wave and Mar ion St. Mary. Preseason favorite for the honor would probably be Columbus St. Charles which has a fine group of veterans returning including ace backs Lou Bomber” Martin and Ed nie DeMatteis. At Dennison St. Mary, Paul Drotovich is hoping for better things when his Blue Waves meet Roscoe Saturday. He has nine lettermen back, including Bob Beamer, who plays guard and right halfback and is what Droto vich describes as “one of the best boys in the state.” Dennison will again run from the split attack with junior Jim Guida and Senior Tony Campisi guid ing the*squad from the quar terback position. Other veter ans are Bob Carlisle, who is showing ‘tremendous improve ment’ at center, Geary Bradley, a junior Paul Smolak, a sopho more, Ken Beamer, a sophomore, BUYERS GUIDE Businass Announcement. Broad 4802 who has been shifted from half back to tackle Bob lelacqua, jun ior fullback, who led the squad in yards gained last year and halfback Denny Kupp, a junior, who played tackle last season. MjM Allen will run from the left halfback spot while the veteran Jack Francisco holds down the other half. Basketballer Simon Williams is ahead so far for the starting fullback nod. Williams, a sophomore, weighs 201 and played end last season. St. Mary's line is led by the capable Bill Camboni at cen ter. The two-tii.»e letter winner weighs 265 and it's doubtful If there's a finer offensive center in the city. As Neville describes him, "He goes about his busi ness quietly but he knows what he's in there for." Art Abrahamson (155) and Jim Dempsey (150) are the start ing ends—so far with Larry Ward (165) and Co-captain Rog ers (170) slated for tackle duties. Guards Jim Sweeney (135) and Bob Devine (155) round out the starting offensive lineup. Neville does quite a bit of switching on defense, sending Williams into a tackle spot and inserting Dick Stringer (who put the Rams in the state basketball tournament with his last-second Drotovich summed up his squad’s prospects with the state ment. ‘“The boys can go as far as they want to, it all depends on their attitude and their desire to win.” Rams Meet BIS Saturday SET FOR OPENER Rickie Bond, quarterback and center Bill Camboni of Columbus St. Mary take the stance that will be shared by 10 other diocesan high school quarterbacks and centers this weekend as the 1956 season gets underway. The Rams play Lancaster BIS Saturday afternoon at 4 o'clock at their Jones Field home. All but one school, Newark St. Francis, get the season started this weekend. Neville Hopes for Improved Season With Strong Line After talking with Ken Neville, it’s hard to figure out whether he’s glad to see the football season coming, or if he's just quietly waiting to get it over with. He’ll tell you about ihe starting lineup being a little heavier than last season’s St. Mary team, then say that the Rams are slower and that he doesn’t have as much line depth as a year ago. He's lost Al Buccilla, his fine three-year ace quarterback and has moved hard-running Ricky Bond from fullback to Buccilla’s old spot. Bond weighs 170 and is co-captain along with tackle John Rogers. Neville has picked up a big asset in 185 pound Bill Allen, uho came back from California where he starred in Los Angeles prep ranks last season after a fine freshman year at St. Mary. basket in the regional finals) and Julius Cowen at ends. A trio of 150 pounders. Jack Downey, Dick Dottie and Jim Lape get the line-backing chores along with Abrahamson who moves in from the line. Jim Mill er at 245 will man the middle guard slot while Bill Barrett (150) and Ed Colston (165) share the halfbacking work. Neville quietly thinks his team has a good chance of improving its three won, six lost record of last season but he knows the im provement will have to come from an aggressive offensive line and Bond’s ability to handle the key quarterback spot. So far he’s en couraged. o Games Won't Hurt This Athlete's Accounting MELBOURNE—(NC)—Ira Da vis won’t be forgetting his school work when he competes for the United States in the Olympic Games here. The Christian Broth ers will see to that. A second-year accounting ma jor at La Salle College in Phil adelphia, the 19-year-old ath lete’s main task will be an effort to win his specialty, the hop, step and jump.
