ROME—(Radio, NC)—A gigan
tic conversion movement is in
progress in the Prefecture Apos
tolic of Hwalien, Formosa, it has
been reported by Fides, Catholic
Mission News Agency.
Since the erection of the pre
fecture in December, 1953, Fides
stated, baptisms have increased
from 550 to 10,426, catechumens
from 120 to 30,069, and mission
stations from four to 260. These
figures are based on a census
taken in January, 1956.

outlining the day’s ceremonies.

monies as a personal representa
tive of President Eisenhower.
The Senator read a message from
the President, which said:
“The faith and sacrifice requir
ed for completion of this new
shrine are a symbol of the faith
and sacrifice required in the
daily lives of all of us. I am sure
this occasion will arouse the im
agination and strengthen the
spirit of all who are present at
it. Please congratulate the arch
bishop and his people on this
achievement, visible and spirit
ual, that is marked by the dedi
cation ceremony.”

and modern Corpus Christi pa
rochial school in the fashionable
Piedmont district of suburban
Eastbay has been opened with an
enrollment of more than 300 stu
dents.
Father Edwin J. Keller, pas
tor, said the school, conducted
by the Sisters of the Immacu
late Heart of Mary, opened with
six grades for the first year of
operation, but eventually will
accommodate some 400 stu
dents in eight grades.
A hitter fight which reached
the State’s higher courts was
waged before the school was con
structed. An ordinance of the
Piedmont district was employed
in an attempt to bar the school
construction, but the courts even
tually held the parish had a right
to build the school.
It is a two-story, ultra-modern
building which, besides class
rooms. contains an 850-seat audi
torium equipped with stage and
dressing rooms, a cafeteria, meet
ing hall, gymnasium and other
features.

Rites Official Thinks
It May Take Years
To Re-Educate Laity
In Church Prayer Life
ASSISI, Italy (NC) Catholics as a whole have
been separated so long from the common prayer of the
Church that it will require generations of re-education to
bring them back to active, genuine participation in her
worship.
This was the judgment that a
ranking official of the Sacred
Congregation of Rites voiced
in an address before the Inter
national Congress on Pastoral
Liturgy here. The official, Fa
ther Ferdinand© Antonelli, O.
F.M., stressed, however, that
the "patient work of reeduca
tion, spiritual and technical,"
to restore the faithful to the
true liturgical life "must be
gin."
The Franciscan scholar is head
of Section HI of the Congregation
of Rites, which is charged with
revising the official liturgical
books of the Church. Father An
tonelli spoke on the new reform
of the Holy Week liturgy and on
prospects for other changes in
the future.
The success of the Holy Week
reform can be called real and en
during "only when the people,
all the people and not just a lit
tle chosen, privileged group,” feel
“the need rather than the duty
to participate with their whole
heart and soul in the sacred mys
teries,” he said.
The Franciscan remarked in
this connection that the In
struction accompanying th* re
vision of th* Holy Week Ordo
"is directed first of all to the
priests, and insists in impera
tive terms that they must be
the first to strive to penetrate
into the spirit of the reformed
liturgy of Holy Week."
But in order to bring the faith
ful to an understanding of their
active role in the Church’s wor
ship, he said, there must be sys
tematic instruction. Father An

that “the liturgical reform of
Holy Week in this first year was
truly successful on a large scale.”
He said that various bishops had
reported “some practical diffi
culties,” and he indicated that
some minor revisions might be
forthcoming.
As for extra-liturgical devo
tions of Good Friday, Father An*,
tonelli said:
“There is no reason why there
cannot be a solemn Way of the
Cross or the hour of the Addol
crata or the procession of the
dead Jesus after the liturgical ac
tion of the Lord’s Passion.”
