schools.
In April. 1950. it recalled, prom
ises were made by the Polish gov
ernment to the Polish bishops
guaranteeing the existence of Ca
tholic schools and the continu
ance of religious education in
public schools.
Three years later, continued
L’Osservatore, on May 8. 1953,
the bishops sent a memorandum
to the then President Boleslaw
Rierut complaining that in spite of
the government’s promises, relig
ious education was being syste
matically banished from public
institutions.
This is what happened, 1’Osser
vatore explained.
The agreement of 1950 recog
nized the right of the exist
ence of Catholic schools. Exer
cise of this right, however, was
destined to meet with constant
difficulties.
At the same time, the gov
ernment recognized the same
right to the communists ‘'Asso
ciation of the Friends of Child
hood’’ and handed most of the
schools over to its care. This as
sociation. being a private group,
was not compelled to provide for
religious education. In this man
ner and against the will of the
parents, most Polish children
have been brought up and edu
cated according to Marxist prin
ciples and in a climate not only
indifferent to religion, but openly
anti-religious and anti-Christian.

and we ere saved." Ordinances,
lukewarmness, a life without
fire and flame, such are the
conditions of
most mortals
which Leon
Bley bids us
to surpass.
In all forms
of love, it
is not long
until lovers
take one an
other for
granted, whether it be
love of God or neighbor. How
often in marriage, the love of
husband and wife which start
ed with such delicate atten
tions and concern for the oth
er’s well being, degenerates in
tn an exchange of egotisms.
And in the spiritual life. too.
there is a decline: a) in the
frequency and fervor of Com
munion, b) in the practice of
self denial, e) an increase of
irritability and criticism, d) a
jealousy and antagonism to
ward others. In a word medioc
rity, dullness, spineless routine.
But how escape and over
come this tepidity? 1) Recog
nize that we heve become too
self-centered and egotistic and
bent on our own pleasure. 2)
Destroy that selfishness by an
act of self-denial or a sacrifice,
o.g. not taking a coffee-break
once during a week, or denying
yourself a or a second
cocktail. As Our Lord said:

means we gain heaven only by
force, by cutting against the
grain of our fleshly desires.

heaven earth and as eternity
time.” Use it to spread the
love of Jesus and Mary among
