A famous English aviation ace of th* last war, Captain Leonard Cheshire witnessed the destruction brought about by the atom ic bomb in Na gasaki. Re turning to England a shaken man, h* was griev ed to learn that a hospit al had dis missed one of hi* war com panions as incurable. No nurs ing home would taka him in so Captain Cheshire accepted him as a guest. As Our Lord said that He is disguised in th* sick and the lame and the blind, this act of sacrifice merited the Captain the gift of faith. From that time on he ha* devoted himself to the care of incur ables. He ha* established ten such homo* in England and three in India with two under construction. To make his homes family affair* he ha* the sick take part in the adminis tration. Ha now has request* for homes in other mission lands such as Malaya, Burma and Thailand. This heroic life reminds one of a Catholic in France. He was unable to receive the Sacraments because there was no priest nearby to assist him in his last agony. So he called in the poor and distributed alms to them that he might see Christ in them. Prayers are not always enough to obtain certain favor* such a* conversions. The captain received his through sacrifices. Other favors too need the faith which sees Christ in the unbe liever, th* leper, the incurable, the blind. Whot opportunities we give you to help Christ in these unfortunates through this column. Make a daily sacrifice and at the end of th* month send it to the Holy Father for the poor of the world through his own Society for the Propa gation of the Faith.
