This has been a great year for all the teams participating in the organized leagues. For some it has been a winning season while others experienced a number of set-backs, but all have become fa miliar with the game and with the spirit of team play. The teams were evenly match ed this season so far as weight goes. This is evident when we consider the scores. Most of the games were close and all were hard fought contests. The Class A Heavyweight league has a three-way tie for first place, Immaculate Concep tion. Christ the King and St. James the Less. Soccer Makes /Jig Hit In Initial Season An old sport but a new nne for Columbus Catholic Youth made its appearance this year with the organization of a CYO Soccer League under direction of the Catholic Youth Bureau. Only three teams competed in the Sunday afternoon loop played at St. Charles but there was plenty of action every week. Players from seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth grades of St. Peter and St. Mary Magdalene Parishes formed teams for the first year. The other squad was made up of ninth grade resi dent students at St. Charles prep school. This definitely was not a school league so only the board ing students at the Prep school could participate. The league didn’t name a champion this year—the reason? Well, because of the newness of the sport and the inexperience of the players, everything seemed to end up in a tie. But the action was still there and the boys really enjoyed this sport which is as rough as they come. Credit for much success of the program goes to Bill Bond of St. Mary parish and members of the Columbus Soccer league. Bill or ganized the Sunday program and secured the assistance of various soccer players in the city to help coach the parish teams. Team players were very en thusiastic with the outcome of this year’s program. Pope Pius received the cyclists in audience at his summer resi dence here and gave them his blessing The Pope told the racers he would be happy to receive them again on their return from Aus tralia as he wanted to be among ’53 Plymouth .. .$595 Cranbrook 2 Door Heater, de froster, 2-tone finish. ’52 Studebaker $575 Hardtop convertible. Grade School Champions Play All-Stars Thanksgiving Day X- IB® A i Kiuk 1 Holy Rosary, the champion in the Class A Lightweight league will play the all-stars of their league. This gave St. Mary Magdalene 11 percentage points and the championship in the Class Heavyweight league, while the second place team, Our Lady of Victory, had 10 percent age points. St. Francis finished its season with a 6-0 record and became the champion in the Class B. Light weight league.
