This warning note was sounded here by Stanislaw Miko lajczyk, former vice premier of Poland, in a statement be fore staff members of the House Committee on Un-American Ac tivities. Mikolajczyk is now chairman of the International Peasants Union, which consists of peasan* parties from all nations behind the Iron Curtain. Its headquarters are in New York. The former vice pre mier recently returned from Par is, where he attended the fifth congress of the union. you BILL RAUSCH 2651 E Main St. Columbus 9 He labeled at "misleading and dangerous" the press and diplomatic reports that give the impression that Gomulka is a Titeist and a rebel against Mos cow. The Polish leader referred to the Polish Red bon as "a fanatical communist whose aims ar# the same as those the Soviet Union, namely: Insure ultimate domination the world by communism Gomulka recently visited Red leaders in Moscow to discuss Pol ish-Soviet relations. Mikolajczyk said that the full texts of Gomulka's speeches give a true picture of his attitude, while excerpts from them often give the free world the wrong impression. Prospect St. Marion, Ohio JIM DUGAN, INC Men's and Boys' Fine Clothing and Shoes Wyszynski, Primate of Poland, to show that the Cardinal is a symbol of freedom for the Pol ish people, and that Gomulka's attitude toward communism has not changed. It is clear from the full texts of Gomulka's speeches, Mikola jezyk said, that his program re mains the same. He has empha sized that the Soviet army must remain in Poland, and he plans to continue the forced collec tivization of agriculture in that country. Mikolajczyk said that in a speech given in October, Gomulka stated: “We will'not permit any one to use democratic processes against socialism.” of to of Gomulka has found it neces sary to permit certain “liberaliza tions,” the Polish leader observ ed, because of the violent anti communism of the majority of the Polish people. He referred to the recent release of Cardinal Wyskynski as one of these "lib eral” gestures. He cited four main reasons why the Poles hate the Soviets more than anv other nation does: 1) Nikita Khrushchev, Soviet Red Boss, was responsible for the deportation of nearly 1,500, 000 Poles to Russia when he served as general secretary of the Communist party in the Ukraine. 2) Soviet Premier Nikolai Bul ganin was the emissary for the Lublin (communist faction) Pol ish government. 3) Since World two million Poles ported to Russia. 000 Polish officers. 4) The Soviets are exploiting the economic resources of Pol and. War II about have heen de including 40,- The U.S. Government should not aid Poland, he said, unless it is sure that the following condi tions have been fulfilled: Free elections in Poland, and the abo lition of secret trade agreements made bv its Red-dominated gov ernment. Unless there is a guarantee of some kind of free Polish govern ment, U.S. assistance to Poland will only help to build up Soviet strength, he stated. He suggested that the question of free elections in Poland he brought up for discusison in the United Nations. u_O------------------- NEW ORLEANS (NC) AH “keno” and “bingo” games and raffles, even when the proceeds are turned over to worthy caus es, have been declared illegal by J.P.F. British Catholics Comment On Sex Crime Prosecution LONDON (NC) Th? Home Office, British government min istry controlling the police and prosecution of crime, is consider ing a report submitted bv a group of Catholic sociologists and priests on the legal punishment of crimes against sexual morality. An important point of the re port is the fact that "British criminal law does not seem to distinguish between sin, which is a matter of private morals, and crime, which is an offense against the state, having anti social consequences." The committee urged that the government retain the utmost penal sanctions against sexual of fenses against minors, public de cency, and the exploitation of vice for the purpose of gain. But it recommended that “con sensual acts done in private by adult males” should not be pun ishable by law. The Home Office is currently conducting a thorough investiga tion concerning the rise of homo sexuality and prostitution in Britain since the end of World War II The purpose of the Cath olic group is to make clear to na tional legislators the Church’s viewpoint on the subject, which has become almost a national scandal and a point of frequent discussion. The committee agreed that the distinction between personal sin and public crime is not always easy to define, but that it is “cer tainly ignored” in existing Brit ish legislation. Present British penal law imposes penal sane tions for “acts of gross indecen cy done by consenting adult males in private.” The Catholic committee point ed out that, with regard to pros titution, “the same principles ap ply, from the point of view of moral theology, as in connection with homosexuality: The distinc tion between sin and crime is equally valid regarding prostitu tion.” The existing practice of prose cution for soliciting and impor tuning is indefensible and should be discontinued, they said. Pros ecution should be carried out in cases where sufficient exidence is available only, and in such cas es the courts should be empower ed to inflict suitable penalties. The present penalties are usually trivial fines without any deten tion whatever. --------o------------------- Legionnaires For Peace INDIANAPOLIS. Ind (NC)— A plea to all legionnaires to “pray for a lasting peace” was issued here at the close of the two-day national meeting of American legion chaplains. Spiritual leaders of the veter ans’ organization urged the use of public transit vehicles’ adver tising space for religious mes sages. They also recommended that legion posts initiate awards for community members who have promoted in a special way the organization’s “Back to God" movement. Literature on the “moral and spiritual values” of American documents such as the Constitu tion and the Declaration of In i dependence also was planned by the chaplains.- Such literature will be distributed, with the ap iproval of state education boards, to teachers. Father Bernard Gerdon, a priest of the Archdiocese of In dianapolis, is national chaplain of the American Legion. 4 spoVting roofing SCHILL FURNACES Repair Work 23 Years Experience Free Mt in ate*—New work guaranteed 3* JeffersM Street FA 4-4471 Newark. Sensational ists have completely distorted the meaning of the Dead Sea Scrolls, according to Father John M. Oesterreicher, director of the Institute of Judaeo-Chris tian Studies at Seton Hall Univer sity, Newark, N.J. In an address at St. Rose's College here, Father Oester reicher gave examples from the Dead Sea Scholls which he said show that the evangelists were faithful recorders of what they had seen and heard. He said the fact that the scrolls tell of men who, during the days before the coming of Christ, pledged themselves to a life of penance and communal living and worship—even to a life of pov erty, chastity and obedience proves that the monasticism of the Church has profound roots in the time, land and people of Jesus. It also provides a vivid in stance of the deep links be tween the Church and the Is rael of old, according to the director of the Judeao-Chris tian institute. The second volume of the In stitute's yearbook, “The Bridge,” which contains a comprehensive study by Father Oesterreicher on the scrolls, has just been pub lished. -------------------o------------------- For Quick Results Use Want Ads Information Schlitz Burger, Gam Distributor in Licking County Hines Distributing Company Newark O Phone FA 6-6911 Carry Outs MONTGOMERY CARRY OUT COLD BEER ALE WINE PARTY SUPPLIES CASE DELIVERY Open »:6# A.M. to 12:40 P.M. 103 8 Third FA 8-4351 SEPTIC TANKS NEWARK Pre-Caat Concrete SEPTIC TANKS CONCRETE AND CINDER BIDCKS W.
