The lit urgy re-enacts the drama of Our Lord’s life, death, and victory over death. The first day of the Church year is the Sunday clos est to the feast of St. Andrew. November 30. Other dates are de termined by Easter Sunday which is always celebrated o’ the Sun day on or after the first full moon of spring. Here is an outline of the Litur gical Year: The Seaton of Advent lasts four weeks and prepares us for Christmas in a spirit of pen ance. The priest wears purple vestments to remind us to im itate the mortifications of St. John the Baptist. The Season of Christmas ex tends from Christmas Day to January 5. The priest wears white vestments to signify our joy in the birth of Our Saviour. The Season After Epiphany runs from January 6 to Septaugesima Sunday. It is a season of hope symbolized by the green vestments the priest wears. The Missal has Masses for six Sundays after Epiphany, but if Easter is early, some of these are carried over to the following November. In 1957 Easter falls on April 21, so none will be carried over. Tha Season of Lent is antici pated by the three Sundays of Septaugesima. Sexagesima, and Quinquagesima and is a sol emn period of penance marked by purple vestments. The forty days of Ix'nt remind us of the forty days Our Ixird spent in the desert. The Season After Easter cel ebrates the triumph of Christ over death in white vestments accompanied by the singing of many “Alleluias." The Season After Pentecost is the longest period of the Church Year and extends to Ad vent. It is a season of hope marked by green vestments and signifies the long period in which the spirit of Christ op erates through the Holy Ghost in His Church To help you follow the unfold ing pageant of our Redemption use of the Missal and the Lit urgy of the Week on page two of Catholic Times.
