Church, National, Local Leaders Send Regrets Tributes to lhe memory erywhere. Archbishop Amleto Giovanni Ci eognani: Received with deep re gret the sad word of the death of the beloved Bishop Heady and join in sincere sympathy the clergy, religious and laity of the Diocese of Columbus in their great loss. Recall with affection my asssocia tmn with him when he was secre tary of the Nt'WC and also his co operative assistance with regard to the Pontifical College Jose phinum. Have offered lhe Holy Sacrifice for the repose of his noble apostolic soul and shall con tinue to remember him in my prayers. Archbishop Francis Keough, Bal timore. Md I was profoundly shocked to learn of the death of your beloved Bishop Ready. His long and great service not only to the Diocese of Columbus but also to the entire hurch in America merited exceptional honor and re gard for him from brother bishops, the clergy and lhe faithful in the name of the administrative board of the National Catholic Welfare Conference and in my own name 1 extend deep sympathy to your Dio cese on its loss. May God grant rest and reward to his great soul. In its lead editorial on Friday, May 3, the Columbus Dispatch said: The unexpected death of the Most Rev. Michael J. Ready, bishop of the extensive Columbus Diocese, found him in the midst of a heavy burden of good works. Bishop Ready, who had labored ceaselessly at the task of translat ing Christian Concepts info the realities of the everyday world since his installation here as this area's filth bishop in 1945, long ago created a pattern of effort in behalf of his diocese that seemed infinite in its projection. There was no end to the labors that must he done if the function of his high office was to be serv ed. He was tireless in giving of himself and his influence to the betterment ami lhe comfort of the 23-county diocese over which he presided. o I u bus. especially, benefited from the gracious and constructive way in which he work ed with lhe whole people for a better ami finer city. His indefatigable devotion to both public and private need and his inspired understanding and compassion of the basic spiritual aspirations of humanity glorified his service. Because of the selflessness with which he threw himself into the Unending work that faced him. Bishop Ready became not only a familiar figure to those who have come into contact with him, but a beloved one. He epitomized, as it was his mission to do. the great comfort, the universal love and the constant inspiration of the Christianity which he both preach ed and practiced. He stood boldly and progres sively on the side of men in the continuing political and economic controversies of our changing era. He championed the sanctity of la bor, and to signal his church’s po sition he inaugurated an annual la bor Rally and Mass at lhe Cathe dral here. He spread the mantle of Christian grace over all races. He expanded the services of the Cath olic Church by adding 18 new par ishes to lhe diocese and added greatly to its physical facilities. The many civic and cultural ac tivities to which he gave much of his energy are the better for the inspiration of leadership. The good, the needy, the sin Ding in need of understanding and I £30 S. SIXTH ST. CA. 4-3842 Bishop Ready came from ev- forgivencss, the spiritually hungry, the well to-do and the poor have suffered an unexpected loss in Bishop Ready’s untimely death. But that he was permitted to do so much of his work here and that he did it so well and with such unswerving devotion constitute a privilege for lhe many who benefit ed from his rich and constructive life in the service of Christ. The Columbus Citizen editorial, also on Friday, said: The death of a spiritual leader in any community regardless of faith leaves a great void. The role which Bishop Michael J. Ready filled in our community was one of progressive leadership and forthright vision. He partici pated in many Colombo's civic tin deitakings and was a leader in the United Hospital Federation drive. His most recent activity in the Catholic community was his De velopment Fund, lhe $5 million fund hail three goals: A rebuilt and modernized St. Vincent’s Or phanage (now nearing completion), new high schools tone completed, one being built and the site for a third selected) and the extension of missions in his 23 county dio cese. He has worked to bring lhe Cath olic community together as a work ing whole His most recent move in this respect was to collect all the Catholic men s organizations under one direction while mam taming their parish entities. His love for children, his affec tion for man, bis hatred of racial barriers and his light against Com munism^were well known. His de sire Io see lhe sick and the home less cared for led to the enlarge ment of Mt. Carmel Hospital, the modernization of SI. Vincent s. All faiths today join with the Catholic community in mourning the passing of their beloved and valiant leader. This soldier of Christ will long be remembered. Community leaders In Colum bus spoke highly of the inspira tional leadership and civic pride Bishop Ready had always exhibit ed. Governor O’Neill said: “I’m shocked and grieved. I knew him to be a great leader. I’m sure lhe community, state and nation will miss his inspiration, his guidance and his leadership.’’ Novice G. Fawcett, president of Ohio State University: “The state has lost one of the most wonderful, lovable men of great character it has been my honor to know, he slunk is pro found. I feel a personal loss in his death. Less than a week ago, we were together. He delivered the benediction at my inauguration. It. like everything he did. was inspir ing. “My every contact with the bish op was inspiring. His forthright ami honorable manner reflected the personality, the striving for performance approaching perfec tion. I can say no more.” Bishop Hazen G. Werner, of the Ohio Area Methodist Church. “He was an eminent Citizen, greatly regarded throughout the community and held in high esteem. His friendships extended far beyond his own faith and church. We certainly join with his innumerable friends in our sense of deep loss to the city and to this part of Ohio." Rabbi Jerome D.
