The Apostolic Delegate conse crated the Bishop on December 14, 1944 in St. Matthew's Cathedral Washington, D.C. He was also closely associated with the Bishop through the Pontifical College Josephinum where Bishop Ready was vice-regent. Brown, Secretary of State: The hearts of the people of all faiths were saddened by the shocking news of the death of Bishop Michael J. Ready, whose place in his Church, in the State of Ohio and the Nation brought him the profound respect and ad miration of thousands who either knew him personally or were ac quainted with his good works in so many fields. I would like to express my sincere sympathy to his family and to you and the others who worked dose to him in (his Diocese. The Ohio State Journal said: The great sorrow created by lhe death of the Most Rev. Michael J. Ready reaches far beyond the spir itual coniines of the Catholic Church. As spiritual head of the 23-county Columbus Diocese, Bish op Ready was loved, admired and respected by Catholics and non Ca tholics alike. He served all who w’ere within reach of his influ ence. 23 His death has brought a sadness that will not soon leave. Many times in the future, problems will devel op in church and community life that will remind all that one of those most needed to help solve them no longer is available. Yet his counsel will be long remem bered. 7 1265 1 275 19,782 It was just 12 years ago last Jan uary that Bishop Ready was elect ed to head the Columbus Diocese. The ensuing period was a relative ly short time for lhe great num ber of accomplishments to his credit. Shortly after his arrival from Washington, Bishop Ready was in lhe thick of church and community affairs. He was a will ing, capable and extremely wise and devoted worker for any right nous cause to which he was called. 1 1 In a metropolitan community there always are a number of prob lems that need special attention with respect to religion, labor, bus iness races, corporate growth, wel fare and civic functions. Bishop Ready was earnestly sought to par ticipate in all such affairs, some thing which he did often td the wonderment of associates as to how he found time for all. 8 With all his numerous commun ity activities. Bishop Ready was foremost a churchman and work ed tirelessly in that field. In his brief span as spiritual head of the Columbus Diocese, Bishop Ready met the challenge of growth with an expansion program in religious, welfare and education fields. Endowed with an understanding of welfare such as few are blessed to possess. Bishop Ready attracted the attention of the President of the United States. The late Presi dent Roosevelt named him to et tend the Intergovernmental Com mittee for Political Refugees, and as a member of the 1946 White House Conference on Children in a Democracy. When Bishop Ready was install ed as head of the Diocese, succeed ing the late Bishop James J. Hart ley, he said: "... The path he trod through life is a bit brighter, a bit safer and a bit more enduring because of him. Columbus is honored and grateful to have had him as a citizen and a leader for the past 12 years. His memory will be an inspiration through the years to come. Mayor Sensenbrenner, who waa at a Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Chillicothe, said: “I have not only lost a good friends and adviser, but the peo ple of our city have lost a good, great man.
