May 3, 1957 Dick McCabe CYO Tourney Top Kegler Dick McCabe of Immaculate Conception rolled a 104 score in the annual CYO headpin tourna ment last Saturday to lead all other keglers and win a trophy in the North section. Barbara* Morrow of Christ the King parish smacked the pins for an 88 score to pace th* girl keglers and win the crown in the East division. Other winners were: Sharon Mesi (74) and Dick Meyers (100) both of St. Agatha the Tri-Vil lage division Judy Kabealo (79) of Immaculate Conception North division Mike Cassady (63) nf Christ the King parish—East division and Barbara Popp (73) and Dave Dehl (75) of St. Mary Magdalene—West division. The tournament was sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and was held as part of the annual Fiesta Week celebration. R/n.s Crown In Mansfield Belays MANSFIELD The Mansfield High School Relays. America's largest interscholastic field and track meet was won this year by Pittsburgh Central Catholic by the scant margin of five-twelfths of a point. The Pittsburgh school scored 22 points to edge out runnerup Mount Lebanon and become th* •econd out of-*tat* school to win the crown in the relay's 26-year old history. Two records, one, set by Olym pic Ace Jesse Owens in 1933 when he ran for Cleveland East Tech, were broken. Individual scoring honors were son by Otis Drayton of Cleve land Cathedral Latin who finish ed first in the 100 and 220-yard dashes to chalk up 12 points. A total of 114 schools, from Ohio. OHIO Athletes Are Active As Sun Shines Sultry Because the sun was able to chase away the rainclouds and send thermometers to their highest readings of the year, high school athletes last week enjoyed a calendar crammed with sports activity. Baseball dominated the sports scene as schools were able to complete many of their rained-out games. The thinclads took full advantage of the pleasant weather and limbered up their legs on the cinder track as the golfers happily made their rounds on the golf courses. the dio able the Zanesville Rosecrans was only Catholic school in the cese whose golf team was to celebrate last week as Bishops racked up two wins. Rosecrans blasted Lancaster St. Mary, which is fielding its first team this year, 12-0, and rolled past Mt. Vernon St. Vin cent 14-2 to post victory no. 4. Golf Baseball Track The lone bright light in Cath olic 1rack action was New Lex ington St. Aloysius which edged out Zanesvijle High School, 6023 to 57*3. All other Catholic teams tasted defeat. Pat Allen, star athlete at St. Aloysius, paced the thinclads with l6’/a points. The Blue Knights showed plenty of endu rance in the distance events to defeat Zanesville, which is fielding its first track team in several years. Elsewhere. Columbus St. Mary was clobbered by Marion-Frank lin. 87-30 in a dual meet which saw Jim Ixx'khart of the win ners set a new school high jump record of 5 feet, 10 inches. fielding its scored only Worthington host school. St. Charles, also first track team, two points in the relays won by the matches. Worthington scored 48 points to edge out second-place Newark which broke three of five new relay records set at the meet. Th* meet was won by the Linden Panthers who scored 82 points to runnerup Big Wal nut's 78’/a points. St. Mary had three meets scheduled for this wek. The Ramblers were to travel to Grove port on Tuesday and Linden on Thursday. They are to meet St. Charles and Rexley on the latter’s field tomorrow in a triangular affair. Coach Jack Ryan'* diamond stalwarts, defending Metro League champions, won two league encounters to remain undefeated in the circuit five games. after Acad Wiles In a league fray against emy. Cardinal pitchers Dan and Bob Koerner limited academy to one hit in winning 3-0. Paced hy Sam Davies, Rosary i battle. i Hoffman and Duane St. Charles clobbered 12-2 in a Metro league DeMatteis and Fred Butch Blackburn pitched a one-hitter against East as St. Charles won, 2-1, on the strength of DeMat teis’ home run in the sixth in ning. In an annual double-header against Lancaster, St. Charles had to settle for a split, win ning 5-3 and then losing 9-1. Lancaster has a 9-2 mark. Aquinas, defending City League champion had a rough week as the Terriers were able to eke out only one victory in three out ings. North found the Terrier’s pitch ing much to their liking and pounded out a 20-2 decision to topple Aquinas from the unheat en ranks. The next day Aquinas became Central’s first victim of the year as the Pirates took a 5-3 decision. The Terriers were able to sal vage one game from the week's mess when pitcher Don Laird knocked in the winning run to nose out Grove City, 8-7. Holy Family won its only game of the week as Tommy Cullen pitched a five-hitter for a 6-5 Metro League decision over St. Mary which is winless in league play. Watterson's Eagles found them selves on the short end of the score three times as they lost to Linden 7-2, to University in a Metro league to Academy, 6 1, affair. battip, 9-4, and in a non-league St. Vincent's fatten batting Mt. Vernon pitching helped averages as the Blue Streaks floundered in three diamond contests. St. Vincent lost to Gambier, 11-6, and then dropped a marathon to Danville, 21-16. The Streaks also fell to Lou donville, 15-4. St. Rosecrans lost a tough 2-0 game against Cambridge despite a five hit performance by its mound corps. Aided hy eight errors, Ports mouth West, with only four hits, won out against Portsmouth Notre Dame. 10-4.
