(NO By a margin of 46 to 49, the Wiscon sin Assembly has defeated a bill to give a tax deduction to tax payers who have children in pri vate and parochial schools. Assembly Bill 228 was intro duced by non-Catholic Assembly man Wilder Crane Jr. of Chippe wa Falls as “a minimal attempt to seek justice” for those paying “a double tax burden” because their children do not attend pub lic schools. The measure would have allow ed deductioin of tuition pay ments to private and parochial schools from gross income on the state income tax. The bill’s opponents defeated the deduction measure by a mo tion for “indefinite postpone ment*’ which was passed by a 51 42 vote, with seven absent or not voting. They then moved for “re consideration” and this was de feated by a 46 to 49 vote, with five absentees. To Get Interracial Award BROOKLYN (NQ—Michael J. Corrigan, a past grand knight of the Knights of Columbus, will receive the 1957 Archbishop Thomas E. Molloy Award for Interracial Justice at a cere mony here on May 19. The announcement was made by the Catholic Interracial Coun cil of Brooklyn. Education Of Large Numbers Key To More Scholars MILWAUKEE (NC) The president general of the National Catholic Educational Association said the key to producing the Catholic intellectual leaders of the next gen eration is the education of “large numbers of good Catholics.” Archbishop Albert G. Meyer of Milwaukee cautioned Catholic educators of the danger of being “so preoccupied with the production of outstanding scholars that they would give in sufficient concern to other ob jectives which the Church right ly expects of her schools." each one of them able to think, udge and act in accordance with the example and teaching of Christ, and capably to take the part fitted to his station in life. “She wants to leaven society with many reasonably well-train ed Catholic business men, pro fessional men, mothers and fath ers, sisters, brothers and priests. This is what the secular universi ties have been doing in their fields, end from the multitudes so trained, the intellectual lead ers emerge: “Many professors and scholars of excellence are now finding great joy in their work In our Catholic colleges and universi ties. They add to our hope for the future. “As the percentage of Catholics among the learned rises, the number of Catholic intellectual leaders will rise too,” he said. The keynote speaker of the convention was Charles J. Mc Neill, immediate past president of the Catholic Press Association, who is general manager of Geo. A. Pflaum, Publishers, Inc., Day ton, Ohio.
