The question: “Who’s the pa tron saint of athletes?” The query caused a few blank stares, another question “is there such a patron?”, and then a rush to the reference books. After a careful search—suc cess! There indeed i* a patron saint of athletes—St. Sobastian. He is also known as the patron saint of soldiers and protector against contagious diseases. Not too much is known about St. Sebastian since the story of his life has been clouded a great deal by legend, according to re liable sources. However, it is known that he was a Roman martyr, having been put to death on orders of the Emperor Diocletian in the third century. The manner of execution is highly questionable. St. Sebastion is ragarded as one of the early defenders of the faith. He entered the Roman Army without revealing his faith or his intent to assist and pro tect Christians who were under going terrible persecution. et I I In the Army, St. Sebastian foiyid favor with the Emperor Diocletian and was appointed a commander of the imperial bodyguard. AH the while, he secretly aided the Christians. Finally, he was discovered and the emperor ordered his death. Here is where his story becomes a bit garbled. One story goes that the em peror ordered St. Sebastian to be shot to death by a troop of arch ers. They were supposed to have tied the Saint to a tree, shot him and left him for dead. But, ac cording to the story he was not dead and was nursed back to health by St. Irene. his close Sebastion the pres Upon recovery from brush with death, St. professed his faith in ence of the emperor. Diocletian, after recovering from the shock of seeing St. Sebastian still alive, ordered him to be execut ed with clubs in the amphithe ater. Thl» latter order wii carried out and St. Sebastian died. He was buried in the catacombs of Romo. A basilica was erected over his grave in 367, and in 1611 the present church was built. According to authorities, the story about the attempted execu tion by piercing with arrows is considered unhistorical. Yet this account found great favor among Italian artists of the Renaissance who often portrayed St. Sebastian with arrows in their works of art. How did be become known as the patron saint of athletes? No clear-cut statement could be found on the matter. How ever because of the popular story of his escape from death by the archers, he was named th* patron saint of archers. Archery was a popular sport in the age of Roman empire. It grew in popularity all across Europe until the invention of gunpowder. Tying in all these stories i circumstances together, St. bastian became known as patron saint of athletes. The second game was forfeited when the team walked off the field after its coach was thumbed out of the game over a dispute. The Cardinals used one of their key weapons—the squeeze play— to cop the opening game. Mike Sweeney squeezed home Fred Blackburn to break up a pitch ing duel between St. Charles’ Bob Koerner and Grandview’s Lyn Raney. Watterson split a twin-bill with Jonathan Alder. The Eagles fell in the first game, 6-4, while col lecting only three hits. However, they came back in the second tilt, bashed out 11 hits, and humbled Alder, 13-5. Single games are scheduled for July 2-3 and a doubleheader is on tap for July Fourth. Miami comes into town the next day for single games July 5 and 6 and a doubleheader on Ju ly 7. The Jets, who find themselves in a rough International League race, then take to the road. One of the main reasons fnr the Jets’ recent success is Joe Altobelli, flashy first baseman. Since he joined the club several weeks ago the Jets have shown more poise and confidence. His graceful fielding has pro vided thrills for the spectators and his timely, although rather weak hitting, has provided key runs in the Jets’ many one-run decisions. Sports, Topic As President Meets Priest WASHINGTON (NC) Talk turned to fbotball when a Cath olic college president called at the W’hite House to meet Presi dent Eisenhower. It developed that the priest and the President share a common gridiron experi ence. Both played against the Car lisle Indians and the great Jim Thorpe Msgr. John L. Sheridan, presi dent of Mount St. Mary’s Col lege, Emmitsburg, Md., went to the White House to invite Presi dent Eisenhower to “drop by” during commencement week 1958, when Mount St. Mary's will be observing its sesquicentennial. The President was unable to give an answer at this time. Mount St. Mary’s College is not far from President Eisenhower’s home in Gettysburg, Pa. Msgr. Sheridan was accompa nied by Sen. J. Glenn Beall of Maryland, who was his “friendly enemy” when the Senator attend ed the nearby Gettysburg (Pa.) College and the Monsignor played on the Mount St. Mary’s eleven. In the President'* office talk got around to football games of 1912. Msgr. Sheridan recalled that the Mount St. Mary's team on which he played opened that season against th* Carlisle In dians and took a 42-to-6 beat ing. The President recalled that the West Point eleven on which he played encountered the In dians later the same season and lost 32 to 14. Even the pre-game warm-up of fered something of a shock, Msgr. Sheridan recalled. Mount St. Marys’ had only 14 men on its entire squad, while the Indians sent onto the field four teams of impressive size. Hopes sank even lower when it was observed that Jim Thorpe was kicking the foot ball the length of the playing field in practice. A psychiatrist was examining a new patient. “Do you ever hear voices without being able to tell who is speaking or where the voice is coming from?” “Oh, yes, frequently!” replied the patient. “And when does this occur?” “Every time I answer the tele phone,” the man replied calmly. —Catholic Digest if:OLUMBU OK 100 Car Selection OK OPEN DAILY 8:30 A.M.
