AMERICAN REPUBLICAN. [Correspondence <>f the llrtltniiore Clipper.] WASHINGTON, NOV. 0, 18-14. For the last two days and nights this city has been under the greatest political excitement that ever was witnessed. During the whole of yesterday, the public anxiety was wrought up to the vei v highest pitch, both parties being el evated and depressed, as they made their calcu lations as to the probable result in the Empire State, which is to decide the momentous con test now about closing, for the highest office in the gift of a free people. Last night, from dusk until the Telegraphic announcement was made of the latest returns from the western counties of New York, Pennsylvania \venuc and Seventh street were crowded with an anx ious multitude, walking to and fro in parties, or standing in groups, and all waiting for the ex pected returns. It was nearly one o'clock, A. M. before the announcement was made to both par tics, that the result in the Empire State was in favor of James K. Polk for President, and Si las Wright for Governor. On tho announce ment being made to the democratic party, they lit up a large bontiro, and spent several hours, until break of day, in rejoicing and revelry.— Thus passed away hero the hours immediately after the Telegraphic announcement. This morning there seems to be a perfect calm, and 1 am happy to say that I have heard f no acts of personal violence growing out of party feeling. The business of'ovir Criminal Court will he resumed next Monday, when the petit jury, who were discharged on Wednesday so'nnigiit until tile 1 llh inst., will he again iu attendance. The Hon.
