CoxunEfS —Organization or bulk Houses—Tin President's Message. It will lie seen liy tlie let ter of our Congressional Reporter, that a quo rum was formed in both Houses of ( ongrcss yesterday; consequently the President's .Mi s sawe will he delivered at noon to-day, and will be immediately despatched by Government Express for this city. In order to accommo date all who may wish to procure early copies of the Message, wo shall have it for sale at our counter a little alter one o'clock, or imme diately after the arrival of the Express NATIONAL CONVENTION. It lias boon pro posed in some of the papeis, that the American Republicans hold a National Convention on the J'.'d of February next, to issue a general de claration of principles and to secure unanimity of action. No dry nor'.J bo so appropriate for such a meeting as 100 birth-day ol the bather of Ins country —lor the object of the Conven tion would bo, to secure and perpetuate the in dependence which ho was mainly instrumental in procuring for his country. Wo approve oi the proposition and shall give it our hearty co operation. To insure success to the great cause in which the American Republicans arc engag ed, there must he not only devotion ol heart and of mind, hut perfect unity ot action. Our opponents charge that the American Republican party is founded upon but one idea, viz: toe proposed change in tiie naturalization laws! To undeceive them upon this point, and to prove that the principles of tins party embrace all American interests in opposition to those of for eign countries, would ho the appropriate duty of the National Convention—we therefore say, let it be held on the day proposed, at such cen tral point of the union as may he considered most advisable. The proposed day is not too early, for the evils to be remedied are pressing, and are daily increasing in magnitude. We think liiat we can give the assurance that. .Ma ryland will be fully represented in the Con vent.on. '•'p.. GIIEEI EY'S ADDRESS BEFORE THE LITE RARY SOCIETIES or HAMILTON COLLEGE. — The subject of this address is,' The Discipline and Duties of Scholars." Mr. Greeley lias discussed his subject with much ability and at great length. He starts with the truth, that physical discipline is necessary to mental cul ture —that a healthy body is indispensible to a I sound mind—lie would therefoie connect ma nual labor with our systems of education. In : the examination of this point lie is able and convincing—and, indeed, the position is iucon-' trovertiblc, being in perfect accordance with; nature. Physical labor is indispensible to u healthy condition of the mind; and we therefore approve tho suggestion of Mr. Greeley, (and j which has been adop ed in some seminaries of education,) that a portion of the student's time should he devoted to such manual labor as will fully develope bis physical powers to the greatest advantage. Rut then laboi is con-j sidered disreputable; and it is difficult in tlicj present slate of public opinion, to convince a parent that, to combine manual labor with! mental instruction, would not degrade his soil, j and throw him out of the pale of respectable, society: liis health, and probably his life, is therefore sacrificed to this mistaken notion.— ; On tiiis point we make the following quota-; tions from the address, and commend thorn to; the serious attention of the reader. "The truth is that the fatal evil of pecuniary dependence is not always unfalt even by those I who hold tho responsible position of directors! of the highest education of our youth. A Pros identor Professor who should frankly tell the parents of a proffered student that their son might make an excellent blacksmith or carpen ter'but would neither he eminent nor happy at the bar nor in tbc pulpit, would probably in cur resentment and a withdrawal of patronage I —and yet how often ought such truth tobej frankly, kindly told! It would frequently save: much waste of energies and means, much weari-j ness and heart ache. The true, though rugged man who has nobly gathered a competence by ! following tile plow, would feel offended if as sured that his son was so fit for no other voca tion as that of a farmer—tiiougli that were a genuine tribute of respect to the dignity of the vocation, and the honest worth of the youth. "We are here confronted by the low idea which everywhere prevails of the true rank ol useful manual toil—by none so cherished, as by those who themselves toil, except by the empty demagogue who windily babbles in bar rooms of the rights and dignity of Labor, hoping thereby the means of avoiding Labor. The farmer will not i'eel gratified, though he should, if assured that he can give iiis sou no filter, no belter calling than his own; the hope of the family must be trained to the chicanery of Law or the futility of Medicine in order that he may duly honor his kindred, though he may be re luctant to enter, or at best have manifested no genius or taste for the calling thrust upon him. This is in the true spirit of the illiterare farmer j who insisted on having a sermon in Greek, on I the ground that he paid the clergyman for the j best, and would have it. Thus our higher Education becomes a bed of Procrustes—excel lent for the few whom Nature has just adapted to it—hut a very different affair for all beside. We shall learn yet to study tha unfolding ge nius of tho youth—to be guided by this rather than attempt to overrule it—and to leave to the directors of Education a larger discretion in the premises than they have usually hith erto enjoyed." A laige portion of the address is devoted to the consideration of the subject of free trade, and of the advantages of Industrial Associa tions. ARRIVAL OF PAUPERS AT THIS PORT. Ti c j following communication is from a highly re-j spc table and responsible source, and demand- j the attentive and serious consideration ol the j citizens of Raltimore. From the facts stated it i evident, thai there is a systematic dotes-; inination by the powers of Europe, to get rui j of their pauper population hv transporting thorn to this country, and compelling our citi-j zciis to support tln - .n—and such will inevitably ; li" the case, if wo do not adopt prompt mea sures to frustrate the design. We must arouse j ourselves or we shall ho overwhelmed with j European criminals and paupers, to tho great increase of our poor-rates, tho demoralization ; of society, and the corruption of the ballot-: box. The legislature of the stale will be in session in a few weeks, and a memorial should 1 he signed and present:::' on the subject of these pauper and criminal immigrants, and also to; preserve the ptuity of the elcblivo fianchiso. f For the American Republican.] Messrs. Editors—ln youi piper of yesterday wo observed some remarks in relation to the importation of foreign paupers into New York, and to show you that the evil is not confined to that city, we beg to mention a circumstance which came recently under our own observa tion. Some two months since, a ship called the "Meginiticook," arrived at Baltimore from Bremen with German passengers, which were, landed about 11 o'clock. At - o'clock of the same day, several of them were at tho office of tl 10 alms-house commissioner tor the second ward, applying for admission into that insti tution. Now, as wo are compelled to coiitri bute a portion of our earnings to the support of these "independent voters," who luxuriate! at the poor house, until wanted at our elec tions, we thought ourselves at liberty to in-1 quire into the claims of the applicants, when without the least hesitation, they lliemsclrcs acknowledged, that their passages had been paid, and they sent here for the express pur pose of being maintained at the public ex pense. For the truth of the above statement, we not only vouch ourselves, hut are ready to , refer to the commissioner of the ward for con firmation. Y\ e alt' mplcd, ui the lime, to draw the attention of the public to so gross an abuse, through the columns of the "Sun," but as its publication would have brought no profit into the pockets of the conductors of that disin terested journal, they of eoursdeemed it un worthy of their attention. A TAX PAYER NEW LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC JOURNAL.— The Linntean Association of Pennsylvania Col lege have commenced the publication of a Li terary and Scientific Journal, tinder the title of the "Literary Record and Journal," the first .number of which we have received and read wh.li pleasure. We anticipate that this Jour nal will become a source oi' instruction in lite rature, and the arts and sciences, as the num ber before us contains valuable contributions from gentlemen of distinguished ability; among whom arc the Rev. John G. Morris and Trof. I'!. Foreman, of this city. From the commu nication of the latter it appears, that the Chi nese are untitled to the credit of having first discovered and applied the Magnet to practical purposes. The discovery is dated as far back as the year 1111, and not that only the polarity, but also llicdcclination of the needle was under stood. The price of the Journal is but one dol lar per annum; and those who may desire to subscribe for it, or to forward coin muni cations for the work, will address "Editors of the Re cord and Journal, Gettysburg, Pa." DISCONTINUANCE OF SABBATH TRAVEL. The following letter reached this city just, after the adjournment of the National Lord's Day Convention. The intelligence it communicates is of so gratifying a character, that the Secre taiies have determined to publish it forthwith. OFFICE OF THE N. JERSEY R. R.&T.CO., ) November 271h, 1844. ) To the. President of tin .National Lord's Day (.'(invention now silting at Baltimore: DEAR SIR, —In pursuance to my instruc tions, 1 transmit to you the annexed resolution, j passed unanimously by our Board of Directors, this day. Very Respectfully, Your Ob't Servant, JOHN P. JACKSON, Secretary N. J. It. R. &. T. Co. ! Resolved, That this Company will run no train of cars on t he Sabbath, except in conuec- j tion with the transportation of tho mail, as at present; and that they will run no train on the Sabbath, provided thu United States will dis-; pensc with the mail service on that day. MR. KEEVIL'S LECTURE. We attended the j Lecture of Mr. Koevil on the Polarization of; Light, last evening, and were much gratified with his explanatory remarks, and particularly! so by his experiments, which were highly inter-j esting. and well worthy the attention of the j scientific. The exhibition of the Dioramas was j also satisfactory. We were pleased to see the, room crowded with ladies and gentlemen. He will Lecture, this evening, on Astronomy, and will no doubt have a numerous audience. j SHOCKING MURDER AND SUICIDE. A few day 3 since, in the village of Annaville, Oneida' countv, N. York, a man named Oriin Clover,! in a fit of jealousy, deliberately cut his wile's! throat with a jack-knife, causing her immediate ; death. They had three children who immo- ( dia'.ely gave the alarm, and on Clover's bro-j ther-in-law, who was near the house at the j time, running in to ascertain the cause of the! alarm, he found Clover weltering in his own; blood, having committed suicide by cutting his | throat. Tho deceased were both respectably ( connected. SHOCKING ACCIDENT. A young lady named Bullock, employed in the factory at Bristol, I R. 1., was caught in the machinery on Friday, her skull und neck broken, and her limbs man gled in a shocking manner. Her mother has become deranged on account of it. Swiss BBI.L RINGERS. The last Concert by these popular performers comes off at Calvert Hall to-night, and we advise all wha can con veniently do so, to pay them a visit. They are well worth listening to. ANOTHER MEMBER DEAD. Tiio Raleigh Register announces the sudden death of John L. Foreman, Esq., a member of the North Ca rolina Senate. EXTENSIVE Loss OR ROBBERY. Promissory notes to the amount of $20,000 and upwards, payable at the Exchange Bank, Hartford, have been lost or stolen. MR. CI.AY. TIIO Louisville Courier states I Unit some of the citizens of Frankfort have >r i :; uiizcd tliurnsolvos into a "Clay Testimonial ! Society of Kentucky," for the purpose of huililing a column of stone, not less than I' O ; feel high, on one of the eminences near the | ■-eat. of Government, "in commemoraliori of the misuipassed abilities, integrity and patrint : ism of the unrivalled statesman and orator, ; Henry I lay " \o one will be allowed to sub scribe more than $5. THE SMITHSONIAN RKUUKST. At this time, 1 the interest due to the Smithsonian Bequest Fund, by the Treasury of the United Stales n inounts to j,lSi',ooo, and the whole I'und to ■>(>9o,ooo. ll will be a matter for earnest discus sion iluring the present session of Congress, as to the best means of applying this money. CITY INTELLIGENCE. I.'iu: vs. Justice. Wo. have been put in pos session of certain matters of information, by Messrs. Ridgeiy and Cook, (of the firm of llays, Zoll, Ilidgely Cook, relative to a tour from which they returned on Friday night last, l of rather a novel character. Jn our report of it, however, wo shall confine ourselves to a mere statement of facts. It seems that a per son by the name of Absalom liostick, who iiad ilourished in this city and farther Worth, as a Western merchant, had so ingratiated himself into the good graces of the firm of Messrs. Tif- j limy, Fit" & Gnnticll, wholesale merchants, as j to procure from tliein a large quantity of goods, under false pretences. This fact being j established, through due process of law u rnqui-1 sition was obtained from the Goveruorof Mary- I land, iijion the Governor of Tennessee, for the | delivery of said liostick us a fugitive from jus- j lice. The requisition itaving been placed in I t!io iiands of Messrs. Ridgeiy and Cook, they i proceeded to Nashville, Tennessee, and pro-1 cured from Covering' .loncs a wari'.iiit for the j arrest of liostick, who resided in Hruwnsville;' to which place they immediately went, and j procured his arrest. From thence they went; to Memphis, about 70 miles distant, rn route to ! Baltimore; hut hero they met with a sad disap- j pointinent, for no sooner hid they arrived in ' the place than their progress was stopped, and a habeas corpus issued, requiring them to appear ! before Judge King, to show cause why liostick should not be set at libuily. The parties, ac-! CJl'dingly appeared; Messrs Ridgeiy and Cook, through their counsel, Gen. Loving, of Browns ville, set up their legal light to hold the prise- 1 tier, under the warrant o,' Gov. Jones; but; Judge King, declaring it to he defective in I'uiin, ordered the proceedings under it to he j quashed, and the prisoner to he liberated. Bus- ; , tick was accordingly discharged. We have reason for believing that though lie lias escap ed, through legal interposition, that it was in direct v iolaUnn of the best judgments and feel ings of an intelligent community, who felt sa tisfied of the wrongs it hud suffered at the hands of tins man. Me have seen .t letter from Gen. Loving, of lirownsvillc, who states that Messrs. Ridgeiy and Cook, had done all in their power to bring him to justice, and tiiat their conduct as ofliccrs, was "prompt, legal > and gentlemanly." .I Correction in purl. It sometimes happens j in our notices of the doings "about town," that ; we are led into error as regards the details of| circumstances published; this we regret to say, j occured in our notice in yesterday's paper of! the theft of Mr. Duttou's cloak, at Bradshaw's ( . States Hotel. We stated that after the rob bcry the proprietor had in addition to the usual j locks, bolts put upon the doors of all the rooms as a better security for the guests of the house. j j The wording of the article might jrive the im- j pression to some that the additional precaution : had not been used until after the stealing of J ! the cloak, when such is not the fact, as the 1 bolts wore put on iminediahhj after the discove ry of the robbery of Messrs. Col ton it Lock- i wood, on Tuesday. We take this opportunity i also to state that all the gentlemen connected j with the establishment have been indefatigable j in their exertions to arrest the robbers and re-: cover the stolen property. No person can, of j course, attach any blame to the house, as it j will he seen by a notice below, that private j dwellings have suffered as well as public i houses. • I Wholesale Theft of Clonks. The dwelling of Mr. Mickey, in Liherty-st., near Saratoga, j was entered about 7 o'clock, on Sunday night, j and four cloaks and one hut stolen from the I passage. The names of the sufferers are, Messrs. A. &. F. Dickey, J. M. liaig, and L. Williams. Information was at once given to the oificors, who think that they will lie en abled, in a few days, to give an account of the ; gang of tiiieves who now infest our city. Iter. C'has. T. Torrey. It will be seen by re- j forrcnce to the proceedings of the City Court, | that the ease of the State vs. Torrey, indicted j tor abducting slaves, was concluded yesterday; ! and that ho has been found guilty. A motion | for a new trial was made, by N. Cox, Esq. (and i wo understand M-. Torrey, desires to plead his ! own case if it be grant;) we apprehend, however,' tiiat no immediate action will be had in the j premises as tiie senior counsel, Reverdy John- j sou, Esq. is absent, attending tliell. S. Supreme j Court, at Washington, where lie will remain j I some weeks. Fire on the York Road. The stable upon the j I "Cold Spring Farm," belonging to Mr. llink- j ley, of tiiis city, was consumed by fire on Sa- j : turd ay night last, about 10 o'clock. The I horses and cows were gotten out before the | stable was consumed. A small quantity of j hay and fodder was burnt with the stable.— j Loss trilling. .frivols ul this Port- Doling the past month,! there arrived at this port, 3 ships, 11 barques, I 31 brigs and 10G schooners—in all 151, of which 143 were American, 6 British, 1 Bre men and 1 Spanish. Warning to Minors. Win. Krnsc was ar- | rested yestouluy by officer McKewon, charged j with keeping a disorderly house, in Gay street, j near the Bel-Air Market, where boys gene- j rally nightly resort to play at dominoes, and j 1 on the Sabbath, become intoxicated, and great-1 Iv disturb the quiet of the neighborhood. In j default of security to appear at Court, ho was ! • committed to jail by Win. A. Schaeffer, Esq. j 1 Watch Returns. In looking over the books ] i of the night watch at the Mayor's officeyester- 1 | day morning, wo could discover nothing new. j The record consisted entirely of the old class of vagrants, "fellows by nature marked," who [ have for months and years past made our j watch house their nightly habitation. Two-! thirds of them are persons of foreign birth. ! .In Excellent More. Wo learn that our en- \ crgetin Mayor has ordered the watch to go on i duty at 6 o'clock, on Saturday and Sunday j nights, these being the nights that the rowdies ! more generally commit their outrages.
