I have used ashes as a manure every year am T If ?h n '- ne ? Ce o ' iirrai "S' and s0 KAtisfieil n i.n 1 I value, that I would not sell a bushel for twice or thrice the prices paid for them at the asheries. 1 will give n . firt "'' V ex Peri<-nce m the use of them us a fertih/er, as the best 1 ean say in their favor. Ihe greatest increase caused by the use of them that 1 have known, by actual measure, was on potatoes, used as a top-dressing in the year 1840. After dressing my corn with ashes that year, I bad one bushel left, which I put on eight rows of potatoes, which yielded, at digging time, one bushel more to the row than any other rows in the field. Itwas a sod land, turned over in the spring and planted without, manure of any kind. I have 110 doubt that the one bushel of ashes increased my crop of potatoes eight bushels. The rows were about fourteen rods long. l or corn, I think ashes and plaster, mixed at the rate oi't wo parts of ashes and one of plaster, and a small handlul of the mixture put into each hill, is the best way to use them. his mixture 1 prefer to either, alone or both, used as a top-dressing. J think it has made one-lmll ditlerencc 111 the value of a piece of corn, judging from one row left without the ashes and plaster, not from actual measure ment. It was 011 ground without manure of any other land. Ashes alone, as a top-dress ing, are very beneficial to corn. After it has come up, 1 liud where 1 have used it so, the stalks are larger and taller, the ears longer and better tilled out, and the corn sounder aud some earlier. On grass, such as meadow, if it has run out, so that it yields but light crops, a dressing of ashes, fifteen or twenty bushels to the acre, has increased the crop of hay two, three, or eien four-fold, and, for several years after, good crops of grass have been obtained. 1 have never used ashes 011 wet land, nor with any other manure except plaster.—]. handall, in If isi?onaiu Varnn'r. . How TO GROW SWEET POTATOES.—A North Carolina sweet potutoe grower answers the question,, "What is the matter with sweet potatoes.' as follows:—"Having had much experience in raising that valuable esculent, 1 will give it as my opinion that tho two principal causes < >f lailure are. deep tillage and the kind of manures used. Laud tor sweet potatoes should not be cultivated to a very great depth, especially in Northern lati tudes, as the soil ceases to be a conductor of heat to the depth to which it is broken. Deuce, as they require all the heat that can bo given them, the ground should be broken but a little way below the surface, but kept stirred often while growing. Much depends on tho kind ol manure used. The potatoe takes pot ash largely into its composition: therefore manures containing itare most suitable. Wood ashes may be considered about the best manure generally at hand. However, the best of all manures that J have ever tried, is tho dirt and cleanings from under houses, con sisting largely of saltpetre. Ashes mixed with barnyard manure subserve a good purpose, it is not 1111 unusual thing to hear it said that certain pieces of land are too rich for potatoes, especially barnyards: but should you give the same a heavy coating of ashes, you will find that it is not too rich, it H merely too rich in vegetable matter, but lacks the potash. Potatoes should always be planted in hills." J.t-I B For Mrs Ko*f Occ>iiHy, A\ e know a physician, in large practice, who IS frequently compelled to drive Lis horses hard. He formerly drove the two together, ami used them up in a few years. He HOT; drives them singly, and as far as possible on alternate days. I hey are now, though work nig harder, invariably healthv and strong. Ho attributes this to the fact that if a hard drive .-trains any of the muscles thev have lime to regain I heir tone the next day. Were the horses driven every day. a slight sprain would produce a little stiffness; the parts would rub against each other; inflammation would set in, and the horse be lame- perhaps incurably so. harm horses are not so liable to injury in this respect, as those driven fast over hard roads. But a clay's rest occasionally will help them materially. At all events do not work them Sundays. Man and beast must rest one day in seven, or pay the penalty. Bettor work harder aud rest longer.— Am. AgriculiurUl. JStijßor i'otii Ct'iiars. Hood butter can't be made in foul cellars. Nothing receives a taint more easily than butter. It becomes infected readily by offen sive odors. Much sweeter, better butter is made in spring- houses than in cellars. De cayed cabbages, turnips, etc., in a cellar, do not impart any virtues to butler, but deteriorate it badly, hood butter is one of the great luxuries of the table; and nothing lmt the most scrupulous cure and neatness will secure it. Early in Spring give the cellar a thorough cleansing, and scrubbing if you please. Then whitewash it from top to bottom. A little lime scattered about in heaps is also beneficial. Have an opportunity to ventilate cool nights and mornings; but bo able to close tight in warm weather. Shut in the cool air and give it no chance to escape. Then it' you will scald your pans and crocks and buckets with boiling water daily, and use the proper skill and care, you can make and pack butter that it will he a pleasure to cut.—J in rat World. SI celts. 1 lie fact seems frequently to be overlooked that weeds do more than merely occupy tiro space of land which might otherwise be pr ofita bly cultivated: they exhaust the soil almost as much as the valuable crops. We sav "al most; for, in the absence of direct experi ments upon the point, we only conjecture it; but we may say that the conjecture is well founded. So far as analyses have been carried out, Professor Buckman shows that field weeds carry oil' from the soil an abundant supply of alkalies and phosphates. The ex tirpation of weeds in pasture land is best brought about by continual mowing down of their leaves. Let the "fact" be always borne in mind, as the great authority on weeds says, "As the leaves are the lungs of the plant, never in such cases allow the lungs to develop themselves." i.'i oiMju. am Land may he manured by land. Where a soil is rrclt and deep, it may bo carted to another field where wanted, "tlru same as manure, and the first field suffer none—as the under soil, if very deep, is of no possible use away outo I reach. We frequently see people remove rich soil to their gardens. The garden is benefitted, especially where a garden is to bo made, and tire natural soil is poor. We have known people to remove scores and scores of loads from their rich river fiats, to their yellow kuolis and lean fields, without injury to their Hats, and with great benefit to the fields whore applied. Such manure, it must bo understood, is lasting; and it gives consistency to the soil. Inn word, this method is only balancing your soil—that is, making it all good.— Rural World. BEST V.IIUETIES OE FOWLS.—The Scottish Farmer gives the following estimates as to the value of several varieties of fowls: For chickens for the table—nothing like the Dorkings. 1 or the size of egg —nothing equal to the Spanish, but they do not lay very regularly. For the number of eggs—nothing like Ham burg , but the size of the egg is small compared with the Spanish. 'I he Hamburgs lay about seven months in the year, and never sit. For eggs during the very hard frost and snow—there is nothing like Brahmas. Hard weather does not seem to affect tlicin, and they always look well and "saucy-like," let the cold be ever so severe. Ax Alexandria letter to a foreign journal states that the grain crops now coming forward in all parts of Egypt promise to be mc.-i abundant, ike prohibition again.- the export of cereals is consequently expected to be removed, and an extensive business done during the coming season. As in Turkey, he cotton crop is much below the average of recent seasons, both in ipiality aud expected quantity of the staple. LITTLE AXD 810 SERMOXS.—The writer of this once heard a lay brother make the follow ing remark of his minister, whose pulpit talents were quite ordinary: "Our pastor comes to the pulpit ou Sunday morning and preaches a little sermon ; and in the afternoon he comes again aud preaches another little sermon. In the evening he comes into the prayer meeting, full of love, aud we all have a good time, piayiug, singing and exhorting. 1 ken on Monday, alter spending the forenoon in his study, he goes out and sees a family of his congregation, aud talks to them about Jesus; and does the same on Tuesday, and each day of the week, and by Saturday night the little sertuor.s ou Sunday have grown into big ones." One can easily conceive how a people would be satisfied with such preaching, iieverse the matter. If great sermons on the Sabbath become little ones during tue week, by manifest inconsistencies, would it not de stroy all pulpit efficiency? DON'T BITE YOUR FINGER NAILS.— The post ninr tcin examination of a little girl, aged seven years who died i:i Bethlehem, Loun., revealed the tact that her death was caused by particles which had been bitten from her finger nail-'. Tbov were swal lowed, and. sticking into the sides of her stomach, caused ulceration, and death ensued.
