4 FRENCH FASHIONS. We hear it rumored tliat our longs fkirts and sweeping trains are to be replaced by short petti coats—a desirable change, if effected with modera tion; but, unfortunately, fashion repudiates good sense, and one extreme is generally succeeded by an excess in the opposite direction. The favorite color is decidedly green, for bonnets, trimmings and dresses. Double skirts are worn in taffetas and other light materials. They are both simply hemmed —ornamented bv a plaiting a la vicille. Flounces still "retain l'avar; they are now often arranged so as not to reach higher than the knee.— Sometimes five flounces are so placed as to leave the front breadth uncovered by them, and the in terval thus left is covered by bows of ribbon. Plain skirts, which are always made very full, may be prettilv trimmed by placing a bow of ribbon, "with long ends reaching to the bottom of the dress, on each seam of the front breadth, about a quarter of a vard below the waist. Dresses are also frequent lv trimmed with silk cords arranged in brande liourgs, or in bows with tassels. A very becoming spring or summer toilette is composed of lilac taffetas, with a double skirt, trimmed with bands of violet velvet, with bows of velvet arranged as just described. The corsage is ornamented with violet velvet ".brandebourgs,"and made with live points. The brandebourgs are re peated on the front of the upper skirt. Over this is worn a pointed mantle, having two deep frills and a hood of laee. The bonnet is white crape, edged with cross-way bands of violet taffetas and velvet. A velvet plait of the same color surrounds the crown, and.is fastened on one side by a large bouquet of violets, in two shades. A "ruche of blonde and violets ornaments the inside of the front. Dresses of heav yti ssues are usually made with but one skirt, trimmed with quilles of either velvet or lace, or bow# of ribbon. During the warm weather wide open sleeves appear likely to be most in favor. Barege, grenadine de soie", or English grenadine, toile de soie, taffetas de laine, in checks, stripes, or chine, chambery gauze, printed muslins and pekin, with colored patterns on a white ground, are the fabrics which will be in demand. For full dress moire antique continues to he very much in uie. Chinees and plaid silks, in large patterns, are also much worn. Tuscan bonnets are in great favor, and are o-cner ally trimmed with wild flowers and oats, or with a large rose, foliage and bnds; sometimes with a tulle trimming, embroidered witli jet, and finished with a brown fringe; a brown silk curtain and brown strings. Young ladies wear white crape bonnets, ornamented with ruches and loops of white ribbon, inside; across the head there is a bandeau formed of a red rose surrounded with wheat ears and grass. Many bonnets are made of a soft crown of spotted tulle; the edge of pink crape, with blonde falling over the front, and a boquetof white and pink roses on the left side. A bandeau of the same roses crosses above the forehead, inside of the bonnet. Another is of Isl v green crape with trimmings of straw and bows of chenille and straw mixed. Inside, to the left, a small wreath of white lilac, and bunches of green fruit, ltuclies are the trimmings generally prefer red, whether as decorations for bonnets, dresses, or mantles—they are generally crimped and gofl'ered by machine. Coifl'ures of" velvet and blonde are much worn. The empress lately appeared in a small blonde cap without strings. At the side a large, full bown rose, with a bow of black velvet; of course, this wilt become the favorite style of cap— Cor, Phila. North American. SCIENCE AND ART. AN IMPORTANT INVENTION. —There has lately been exhibited in Paris, an electric light of unusual bril liancy, obtained by the means of a lamp of peculiar construction. The objects of this invention are—to regulate and to keep constant the distance between the two electrodes of electric lights, whatever may be the rapidity of combustion of the graphite of which they consist; to obtain this constant separa tion ot the electrodes by self-acting means, operating by the action of the current which produces the light, combined with the action of a spring, or witli the action of a current derived from the light cur rent; also, to obviate the necessity of any daily regulating of the apparatus. These results are obtained by the passage of mer cury from a reservoir into "a receiving cylinder placed underneath. The tendency of the mercury to rise in this cylinder lifts with little friction a pis ton supporting the lower electrode, which ap proaches the upper electrode according as the mer cury of the reservoir flows down into the cylinder. The action of the electrodes approaching each oth er is produced by means of a valve opening and closing the tube communicating from the reservoir into the cylinder. This tube passes through one of the soft iron arms of an electro-magnet, which receives its mag netic action from the current producing the light, and which shuts the valve by its action upoif an armature of soft iron which it presses against the valve. The armature which shuts the valve by the action of the current producing the light is attract ed in an opposite'direction by a spring, or by a second electro-magnet receiving magnetic action from the derived current, the intensity of which is determined by the resistance ottered to it by a coil interposed for that purpose. MACHINEBV FOB MAKING ENVELOPES. —One of the most remarkable triumphs of mechanical ingenuity is the invention of those machines, by which envel opes are now manufactured with such amazing rapidity and exactness. One of the best contriv ances is that invented by Mr. l)e la llue. The operator places a diamond-shaped piece of paper on a little platform: a sort of plunger descends, and forces the central part of the paper into an oblong quadrangular cavity; the four corners stand erect" and these are successively flattened by four levers, fingers, or thumbs, whereby the envelope form is given. And when all is done, two India rubber fingers lightly touch the envelope, and delicately draw it aside, to make ready for another. These lingers are quite a refinement of ingenuity—they are small metallic cylinders, with bits of India rubber at the lower ends; these finger-tips have just enough of the glutinous or sticky quality to adhere slightly to the paper on which they are'pressed, and to draw it away from its place on the machine. ltut while these processes hare been going on, there is another series also in operation, to "-fleet the gumming or fastening. There is a supply of gum, yyliich spreads itself over an endless apron or blanket, and an artificial arm takes a supply of gum trom this blanket to apply it to the envelop'es. All these movements are so nicely adjusted, that the gum is applied in its proper place'just before the Hap of the envelope is folded down. RJ.
