The steamer Niagara's tele graphed advices on Saturday morning reduced the price in the course of that day to #4.25; and since, until and including Thursday, the price for good common mixed brands lias been #4.12}, at which probably some 4000 brls. have sold, and about 1003 more of selected marks at l.|B}a #4.25, these latter I rates, however, were paid early ill the week, part j c.i-]i and part on time adding interot. GRAIN.—The receipts of all denominations are light, and prices of Wheat are lower than noted in I our last report, the steamer's accounts, which were | received here at the close of the last and beginning of the present week, having mainly contributed to [ the reduction; 92 cts. for Virginia red, and 93 fori mixed Penna., have been the highest rales paid, at the former some 3000 bushels sold and at the latter about 2000. At close not over Ssa9l cts. can be quoted for good to prime Maryland red, these being the prices paid. IVe have no sales ot Rye to report. Corn is in very light supply, owing not only to low rates for reasons stated on a former occasion, hut farmers are now about preparing for planting, which at this season engages most of their attention how ever encouraging prices may oflfer. PLASTER PARIS—Has been selling at $3 per ton, and but little arriving. PROVISIONS.—There lias not been a general de mand, but a few considerable sales have taken place nevertheless, but of such descriptions AS appeared to have been necessary for the supply of immediate wants. No speculative movements are going for ward and no animated enquiries making, and the market inay be said to be any thing else than buoyant. Href- Remains much as tor some weeks past, sell ing only in small lots or small pkgs. to supply orders for export, or for ships' stores —and prices are not uniform. Fork. — Transactions in barrelled descriptions have been ou a limited scale, but we have not beard of any change in prices, and therefore quote which governed the last transactions, viz: 8.75A# ' for Prime, and lift# 11.25 for Mess. There have been several parcels of Bulk in dry salt sold at about last week's rates; and among the most distinguished was the amount of 3d*) hhds. selected short Sides, in dry suit, (hut to he re-packed in new suit ou sellers' account,) at 5 cts. per lb.. Flax is I less firm, and will not command above 1,15a $ 1.16 per bushel. ! SPIRI TS. —N. I*. Rum remains nominally at 27a 27 i cts., the latter fir Boston brands, but the demand is >iack. Whiskey has tumbled down very sudden ly —our closing rates last week were 21 cts. in Ii lids, and 22 in brls.; and now, in closing this week's re port, we cannot quote over 19a19£ cts. in hhds., and 2!)2i); in brls , there having been a decline of lu2 els. per gallon within the last two days. TOBACCO.—The market r -mains much as re ported last week, shippeis willing to purchase suit able Maryland, either of old or new crop, hut the re i ccipts are too limited, and have been more so this i week than tliey were the last, for operations to any j extent. Some parcels, however, have been taken of common to middling sorts, at *2.50tt54.50, and a j few hhds. Upper Country at 6a #lO per 100 lbs. The transactions in Ohio have comprised probably I about 200 hhds., of ordinary to fair grades, including 1 a part for the French market, at 3a #6. Beef, as la>t reported, meets little attention, other than in retail, at declining rules, our present extreme of 85s. for Prime Mess being only obtainable fur one brand. Beeswax has been in active demand, and the mar ie, t is cleared at £b IDs. to j£s 17s. Od. Cheese has sold to a limited extent at previous rates; the London market rilling below ours, has at tracted several of our buyers thither. Com, (s*c. —The downward tendency noted in our last, has continued in full action during the fortnight, ; as regards Wheat and Flour, our present quotations I representing retail transactions only, while, for i Western Canal Flour, in quantity, 235. cannot be ( exceeded. At this figure, however, some consider : able parcels have changed hand-, but not to go off | the market, our stock of Flour remaining but little altered by actual consumption. Indian Corn has main | tamed our previous currency, the exports to Ireland i nearly equalling the imports, good Yellow is scarce, and commands 28s. 6d. to 295. At our mar -1 kct to-day a moderate retail business was passing at our quotations, and 235. continued to be taken tor I Western ('anal Flour; toward the close an attempt | to establish an advance of 6d. checked the demand, j and the market remains as above reported. , Cotton.— Jin port of the fortnight 41,163 bales; sales, 00,980; and present stock 407,300 bales, i against 287,500 at corresponding date last year, lu lluenced by the uncertainty as to whether peace will continue to be maintained on the Continent of Eu rope, and also by recent American advices of large receipts and shipments of Cotton, buyers operate cautiously'; and as holders of American qualities sup ply the market very freely, lower prices have been submitted to. The sales to-day are 5,000 bales, with a quiet market, j Lard has further given way Gd. per cwt.; and, at ( this decline, about 260 tons have been taken during ' the fortnight, holders being free sellers. STITT, DAY &. CO. LIVERPOOL, March 23. 1849. Since our last of 9th inst., more favorable accounts have been received from the East India Markets; but, on the other hand, the unsatisfactory posture of political affairs, both in the North and South of Europe, has had an adverse tendency on trade and confidence; while later accounts of the continued heavy reel's of Cotton into the American ports, still operate rather against that staple. To-day, there : are reports which give some reason to hope that the renewal of hostilities between Denmark and Prussia may he averted. Cotton had further declined 4d. per lb.; but since the receipt of the Indian accounts, has rallied a little, and is now considered to be only id. lower than at the departure of the last steamer. The ordinary and ruiddliiigqualities are pretty freely olfered at this reduction. Fair Upland and Fair Mo bile are quoted 4gd.; and Fair Orleans 4j|d. Mid dling Upland and Mobile, 4 J; and Middling Orleans, ! 4j-jd. per lb. The sales for the week ended 16th i inst. were 31,690 hales, of which 8090 were on spe culation and 3100 for export; and this week's busi | ness amounts to 29,290 bales, of which speculators • have taken 2600, and exporters 3800 bales. A further decline has taken place in i the Corn Markets, and Western Canal Flour is sell ling at the reduced price of 235. per brl. Tlfis fall ! produced some speculation in the article for a few i days, and an advance of 36d. per brl.; but 235. is now the fair quotation for the above description, as j well as for Philadelphia and Baltimore, though for | Ohio of prime quality, 24s is obtained.
