Having fourni my way out of the
Coliseum, ou the 17th. fruiu the mass of
humanity, with more ease ami lfsa time
than 1 have from some houses of public
worship, where there were not WO, 1 went
to a temperance meeting at School Sti-oet,
under the auspice» of tho State Allisnot.
j Among the speakers 1 noticed Itev. J. M.
Usher, Hon. W. Griewold, Dr. Minor,
Kit. J. Ibmn, Rev. J. 1). Fulton,
ami Re\. Mr. Boules, late ol Portland.
Their allusion to the great auccoea of the
Jay, wis most happy, especially the
figure drawn by the latter. His descrip
tion of the building, the vast multitude,
the uuuiber ol musicians with its thou
sands of singers, the deep toned organ,
auvil chorus, drum and cannon, and the
voice of Pare pa Rosa, whose notes alone
entranced the whole body, reminded him
of the great reforms of the «lav. One
voice alone, many time*, win heard by
the multitude with a critic's ear and the
charm was never forgotton, till the object
was accomplished. Friday, I attended a
conference meeting at the Rev. Mr.
Briggs church. It was truly a happy
meeting, where the pastor, brothers and
sisters spoke of the gotnlne» of <?od and
sang llis praise in concert. Although a
week of Jubilee, I tin I the prayer and
temj»erance meetings are not forgotleu in
the city. Sabbath, attended chuich and
saw IV. Minor, assisted by his associate,
Rev. Mr. Cushman, l>aptise H* children,
including the first boru of the latter. The
baptismal fount, the desk nod the galleries
were decorated with various colored
flowers, with great taste. A cross of
choice white flowers at«u\e the speakcis'
stand, the appearance ot those innocent
bains.* ith their parents, sj>oke a language
not expressed. Th«« DCs subject to a
crowded house cmbriced the many
besetting sinthat tempted man froiu
the path of rectitude; the constant
watchfulness on his part, the fierce wars of
the christian World and of our loved
country—the gieat undertaking of a
citizen of Boston to 1 ring under one roof,
people from even part of our bleeding
country to listen to the songs of peace
being a great era. Those great and
sublime impressions, with the scenes uf
thi* morning, would rceall to th·* mind of
many present, the song sung by angels,
that a Savior was born and peace on
earth proclaimed. Sablvath eve, I attend- j
ed the meeting of the Christian Associa-j
ti»<n on the Common. The speaking, the ι
prayers, the congregational singing, the j
attention an<l good order left an impres
sion for g»K*d. It speaks volumes of
praise for the city government, wh ;n it
w i> scon by countless thou-and"* of
strangers, that order is Boston s tir^t law.
