TIIE TARIFF AMI SEWING MACHINES Until the passage <>f the Fortl ncy-McCuniber tarifl law a few weeks ago sewing machines were *>n the free list, ami no tax paid on them at the custom house. '1 hey were permitted to enter this country free of duty be cause no country in the world can undersell us. We make them as cheaply as they can be made any where. Under the Fortliicy-Mc- Cumber law a foreign sewing ma chine valued at less than $75 will pay a tariiT lax of 15 per cent, and those valued at more than $75 will be taxed 50 per cent, on their value, i his will enable the Am erican manufacturer to sell bis sewing machine to an American woman at the price of the foreign machine plus the tariff tax. . I here is little or no competi tion in the manufacture of sew ing machines in this country, and it is said that one American com pany makes S 0 per cent, of all the sewing machines made in the world. Under the Payne-Aldrich tariff sewing machines were tax ed ;) per cent, at the custom house and American manufactur ers sold their machines much cheaper to the women in Europe and the Orient than they charg ed American women. This sit uation led the authors of the Un derwood law to put them on the free list in 1015. The Eordney-Met umber law virtually rotores the Payne-Aid rich tax and will again permit the American manufacturer to sell cheaper abroad than at home. He will jiicct the competition of the worn abroad, ami protected by a fciiiff wall that shuts out foreign lumpetitiou, will charge American women all that the traftic wnl bear. In 192 J, when sewing machines were on the free li-t. our imports were only nine-tenth- of one per rent, of our total production. What reason existed for protect ing the American manufacturer by a high tarilf? the American company that makes practically all our sewing machine - declared dividends from 1915 to 1919. with no protective tarilf at all, "f from 7 to It* pet cent. on a valuation of $00.000,<*90. and m 1920 declar ed a stock dividend of fifty per c<*nt.
