CHAPTER~VIII (cont.)
This was perhaps ac good a time
as any to make iny statement so 1
began:
“It is my turn now to tell you some
thing which I think may prove equally
as valuable as any of the evidence
you have given us this evening.”
Five pair of eyes were fastened on
me in open amazement and expecta
tion. I knew I had aroused their
curiosity, so I did not hurry my ex
planation. 1 sipped my coffee calmlw
until Barry, after lingering as long as
.ossiblc. left the room. However, if
anyone had cared to open the hall
door quickly, 1 am sure he would
Mtlpd he valet with his ear placed
close to the keyhole. But that does
not patter.
“Every man "has his enemies, is that
not o?" I said, placing my cup on the
table, and noting the impatience and
eagnorness of my listeners. “Every
man has his enemies, and Leonard
Whitmore as well ns others. But he
kept this fact securely hidden, and it
was only hy the merest chance that 1
discovered it. It came about in thin'
way:
"it was a cold stormy night over a
month ago. and "Whitmore and 1 were
to attend an important business meet
ing. We had dismissed Barry for the
evening, and were ready to start
when complained of feeling
• ill. I offered to stay at home with
j him, but he urged- me to go alone,
saying that nil he needed waR rest
and that bv morning he would he in j
1 his usual health.”
“You say that Mr. Whitmore com
plained of feeling ill? As I remem
ber him. he looked physically perfect
Can you tell me what was the matter
with hitu?” asked Miss ('arson, inter
rupting me.
“He had suffered for sometime with
severe attacks ©£ neuralgia, though he!
seldom complained or lrt*it interfere*
with either his work or pleasures, ij
have heard him sa** that the pain was
woree than torture.” answered Dr j
Woods in his professional tone.
“Hmn,” commented the detective:
through bis cigar.
“I agreed to go alone.” I resumed
“and at half-past nine I left the
house. Whitmore was seated cora->
fortably by the fire, a book in his 1
hand —yes. it was the same chair in
which he was afterwards found dead
I drove straight downtown, but upon
arriving at the meeting I discovered
that in nvv hurry 1 bad neglected t*

“You entered by the rear entranc-?
Why?” broke in Richmond.
“Because in changing my miit I had

proceeded to search for the papers I
required. Having found them. I was
preparing to leave by the way I had
come, when the voices in the nex
room were raised so that the wordi
were distinctly audible:
j “‘I could kill you for that!’ I heard
j a strange voice shout furiously

j communicating door. I listened. 1
j strained my ears to catch the slight
est word. As i stood debating whe
j ther to leave quietly, or enter the lib

j from the other sNe of the door, as ii
a chair bad -been hastily overturned
Then a man's voice exclaimed in a
; fury:
“ ‘&ome day.l will kill you—mark
mv words Leonard Whitmore. I will
kill you if I have to go to the electric
chair for it A cool derisive laugh
was the only response to this threat
1 paused, noting the effect of my nar

‘ What did you do ther\?” prompted
J Richmond, pencil and notebook in

“Instead of dashing into the study
