TELLS OF MAURY AS GEOGRAPHER OF THE OCEANS 4 irnlluuftl I rum Page 1.) • signed ami war activities ceased. Aj trip was made on the 1". S. S. Von .Steuben early itl 1919 and with the; hydrophone all kinds of propello’r and j lightship sounds could be heard in shallow water, even the position of j the vessel itself could be located by) triangulatii n. but when deep sea was! reached no sounds could he beard with j I lie early installation. Thia led to j the theory that all the sounds heard 1 , were echoes from the sea bottom, and • hi* that with proper instruments the i depths could he measured. Three dif j ferent hydrophone installations have! j Open constructed, two for shallow j water, and a ttiird fyc deep water. | Within five or ten seconds measure ments of the depth and the slant of j the sea bottom may he secured with- 1 out stopping or interfering in any way with the movement of the ship. Using the binaural sense of direction the time of travel of the sound may lie measured to within one-tive hun dred thousandth of a second. Tests Made At SL2(Mt tut horns Dr. Hayes told of a Irans-Atlantic (rip In June, 1922, on the destroyer U. S. S. Stewart in which soundings were made to a depth of 3200 fathoms and in which a plain six hundred miles wide was discovered on the ocean bottom under the gulf stream. He showed several diagrams of the mountains or hanks which rise sev eral thousand fathoms near the Azores, and particularly mentioned the Gettysburg bank which was ter raced showing the water levels of previous centuries. I)r. Hayes clos ed with the prediction that the study of the contours of the ocean bottom had been simplilied tremendously by acoustical sounding. Maury, Sea Geographer Dr. C. Alphonso Smitji character ized Matthew Fontaine Maury as “America’s only great sox geographer. I , by means of whose charts, data and I calculation modern ocean travel has 1 een made possible, of all men born in this country the oiio with the great disproportion between the achieve ments and the recognition." His first achievement was by means of a group of articles on naval reform in 1839 entitled "Scraps from the Lucky-Bag" I which were published by the Rich i mond “Southern Literary Messenger" of whicli paper Edgar Allen Poe was I contributing editor. These articles I advocated, argued and pleaded for a Nava! Academy, among th’e other statements being that there was only one college man In the Navy at that time, and that only one book by a naval officer had ever been written on naval subjects. When the Naval Academy was finally founded Maury’s scheme was the most complete *aud test worked out plan so that “Matthew Fontaine Maury may be re garded as the father of the Naval Academy.” Charting Of The Seas From 1841 to 1853 Maury labored unceasingly in obtaining observations ‘ a wind and currents from many thousands of sea captains and from these dath and calculations originated a series or ehartß which showed the lest routes for ocean travel with the wind and current to be expected. Al , though uct immediately adopted these charts were proved of value when in . a race from New York to San Fran elscr a ship sailing under Maury’s charts won by forty days, and Eng land later announced a saving of two million dollars annually by following Maury’s freight routes to Rio de Ja neiro. "In 1863 Maury was the outstanding ilgure at a love-feast of science, in j ternational in scope, at Brussels. which produced the greatest value to , navigation and meterology. Maury accepted everything that science gave 1 as being a part of some divine design. 1 am sure that Maurv would never have said that a man could not be both an evolutionist and a Christian, as one of our modern orators has re cently thundered."
