NAVY GETS GOOD NT.4KT Winter-like weather greeted the Navy and Syracuse Univer sity ball players yesterday after noon in the opening game of the local diamond season, hut the j prevailing frigidity failed to chill i Navy’s determination to start off, the season victoriously and at the conclusion of the fray the midshipmen's colors were flying triumphantly at the masthead.; While adverse climatic condi tions hindered the fielding of the players, Navy showed enough to its supporters to cause them j much rejoicing. The veterans of last year’s team and the new men alike made an excellent showing, the squad, as a whole. giving every indication of much latent power. In fact, when this; year’s Navy team hits the top of i its stride, we confidently expect great things of it. May the win-1 ning of the opening encounter serve as an added spur Navy to establish a season’s record that will have West Point quak ing in the Army boots when time for the annual service classic rolls around. SLOWLY GETTING RACK Peace-loving Americans who have just completed the annual tussle with the income tax blank may extract what comfort they may from the consideration of the uses to which their money will he put. Hie Chief of the United States Bureau of Efficiency, wl/ich makes a specialty of statistics, has compiled an estimate of the way each dollar raised in the 1995-?4 budget will he spent. The figures follow : For the Army and Navy, 17 cents. For pensions, the veter ans' bureau, etc., 25 cents. hor special activities per taining. to the recent war such as settlement with the railroads, war contracts, etc., 4 cents. For interest on the war debts, 28 cents. For the retirement of the debt. 1! cents'. For the President, Con gress. the courts, executive departments, research, edu cation. public works and all other civil activities, 15 cents. In other words. 85 cents of the taxpayer s dollar goes to pav for I war. most of it for wars already! fought. Fifteen cents goes fori the operation of our government) as a peace-time enterprise. In the course of a generation or two, if no new wars eventuate, Americans will lie paying a much larger proportion toward the ex penses of peace. In the mean time we are paying the cost of the lesson of war. The man who is reatlv indlspens- j able Is not one who is inflated with ‘ his own importance, but the one who] aims to get his task rightly done so : that there can be neither fault nor, cause for fault. | The Indian in America used to eat ’ pine bark.
