Gallantry of the Maine Seventh. Chambeksbcro, Pa., Sept. 22,1802. Another great battle lias been fought in the vicinity of Sharpsburg, Md., and the retiels have been driven. It is certainly refreshing after such a long catalogue of disasters to wit ness the defeat of the redoutable Stonewall Jackson. The contest was determined and the result decisive. Some of the most brilliant charges were made that have occurred during the war. Among them was the gallant, yet fatal charge of the “Seventh Maine.” This Regiment was ordered to drive tile enemy from a strong position about 900 yards in front of the line of battle. Every private in the ranks, knew that a Brigade of the enemy was massed there with a battery of artillery, and that an awful blunder had been made, but obedience Is the first duty of a soldier. The order was given to the regipient to advance. On they Went across the field under a shower of bul lets, halting twice to return the fire of the en emy. After halting the second time to deliver their fire, the Regiment rushed forward with such a cheer as only the “Seventh” can give, driving the enemy before them. The rebels now took reftige behind a stone wall and open ed a galling fire of musketry. At this point, the Regiment had arrived within range of one of our batteries, which had been playing upon the enemy, and not aware of the advance our forces continued firing. The rebels opened their battery with grape and canister. The regiment seemed now devoted to destruc tion, yet the men delivered their fire with steadiness and terrible effect as they moved by the left flank to gain the cover of an orchard. Thence through a corn field by a circuitous route, they returned to their old position in line of battle. Not a man had struggled. All that the bullets had spared were there; but how thinned the ranks! Only sixty-five men now constitute the gallant “Seventh Maine.” Many a brave soldier has fallen either killed or wounded. Acting Adjutant, W. L. Haskell, mounted on a white house, was a conspicuous mar* ior tne enemy s millets, -uia tvmtey received three shots while his rider was shot through both knees. Lieutenant Brown and Goodwin fell, bravely cheeriug on the men of their respective commands. They have con summated a noble life by the most gallant death that man can die. Captains Cochrane and Cook, and Lts. Shorey and Emery, wounded in the early part of the action. Capt. Jones received a slight wound. To this might be added a long list of the rank and file that had suffered more or less, from the missels of des truction. Suffice it to say that all behaved with the most becoming gallantry, and nobly sustained the reputation of their native State. But we cannot forbear to mention the names of Major Hyde, commander of the Regiment, and Lt- Haskell acting Adjutant, who were everywhere present, controlling, directing and stimulating the men. Index. The Old “Kennebec District.” The District which Hon. James G. Bi.aink is elected to represent in the XXXVIIIth Congress, is one of such perisistent steadiness in political principle, that we deem it worth while to recall some facts in its history. In the present apportionment it ranks as the Third District in the State—but it is better known as the “Kennebec District”—as this county is the largest of those composing it, and the one from which it derives its steady Republican majority. It is a fact of some interest and significance, that ever since Maine was admitted to the Union, the District which included Kennebec county has been carried by large majorities •gainst the Democratic organization. As A'« tionnl lit'jiublirun, as Whig, and now as lie publican, the District lias tieeu uniform and overwhelming iu its majorities. From 1810 to 1824, Joshua Cusiiman of Tassalboro’, represented the District. He dis tinguished himself by the zeal and ability with which he resisted the Missouri Compro mise. Pelko Spbaoue, at present IT. S. District Jndge of Massachusetts, succeeded Mr. Cush man in 1824. nml remained in the House till 1829, when lie was transferred to the U. S. Senate as the successor of Mr. Chandler. Georoe Evans succeeded Mr. Sprague in 1829 after a very exciting contest against Rtiel Williams. Mr. Evans was continuously re elected from the District until 1841, when he in turn was transferred to the Senate as the successor of J udge Ruggles. Since Mr. Evans’ term of service, the Dis trict has beeu represented successively hy the following gentlemen, viz: David Bronson; Lither Severance; Hiram Belcher; John Otis; Robert Goodenow; Samvel P. Benson ; Freeman H. Morse and Anson P. Morrill. Each one. of these gentlemen was elected by a large majority over the Democrat ic candidate. Mr. Blaine is elected by some three thou sand majority over Mr. Gould — with some scattering majority for Mr. Smith, of Wiscas set. Had there been any special effort made by the Republicans, the majority for Mr. B. could have been well nigh doubled. It is large enough, however, for practical purposes, aud large enough to maintain the ancient and goodly character of the old ‘•Kennebec Dis trict. ’—[Ken. Journal. MISCELLANEOUS.
