POETRY. When c«reen Leaves Come Again» BY THE AUTHOR OF "JOHN HALIFAX, GENTLEMAN." When green leaves come again, my love, When green leaves come again,— Whv put on such a cloudy face, When greeu leaves conie again? "Ah, this spring will be like the last, Of promise fair and vain ; And summer die in winter's arms Ere green leaves éokne again. "9o slip the seasons—and our lives : 'Tis idle to complain ; But yet I sigh. I scarce know why; When green leaves come again. ftay, lift thv thaukfhl eyes, my swêet, Count equal, loss and'gain ; Because as long as the world lasts, (ireen leaves will come again· For as sure as earth lives under snows, And love lives under pain. Tie good to sing with everything, When green leaves come again. MISCELLANY. Kinolakk'h Personal Appkahanck.— Klnglake, better known ae the author of "Eo then," is a small, «lender man, with pale, thin face, blue eyes, and light blond hair, made more striking by the contrast of his black dress. Simple, elegant, quiet and unobtrusive in his manner, reserved almost to impassive Dees, the first impression which he makes is that ol° a cold, unintcllcctual man of the world, fiis eyes however, I soon noticed, are of that peculiar blue which burns, under ex citement, with an intense white heat. A man with such eyes always possesses character and unflinching courage. Kinglake is said to be one of the bravest men in England. Although accompanying the army in the Crimea only as an observer, he was the (lrst man over the AIJ ma river. Those who knew him best, I re marked, expressed the highest estimate ot his abilities. I had lh«s pleasure of some conver sation with him, and found that his quiet .ex terior covered, at least, a ereat deal of ripe Knowledge.—[liayard layior. An Union vincino Speakkk.—Tlie late Bishop of Londou (Dr. lllomlleld) was a line Greek scholar, but au indifferent speaker. It is related of ΙΓιιη, in a volume of memoirs just published in London, that when the livings of Great and Little Chesterford, and of Tydden hain, in hit native county, had fallen into his lap, he preached at Chesterford on the text: ''The fool hath said in his heart, There is 110 God !" He preached ej'tempore Cor the first and only time in his life, having forgotten his written sermon. Anxious to know how he had , succeeded, he asked one of his congregation on his way home, how he liked the discourse. "Well Mr. Blomfleld," replied the man, " 1 liked the sermon well enough; but I can't say j 1 agree with you ; I think there be a God !" i It is added that in later life his speeches in the House of Lords were remarkable for what I this discourse wanted—clearness ; but in that assembly the Bishop never spoke without great previous reparation, the manuscript ' notes for his harangues having been made with the utmost can·. An Amusing Dodge.—A few days since, 1 at Elinira, X.Y., while some laborers were en- i gaged in digging a cellar, the owner of the premises picked up from the dirt a twenty dollar gold piece, which he took particular pains to show about town. The excitement became intense, and the cellar was quickly Ailed with volunteer laborers, who threw out the earth with a rapidity that must have been exceedingly gratifying to the person interest- j ed in having the work finished. Occasionally an old copper would turn up, and soon sieves > were in requisition. Then a 25 cent piece was discovered. At that one fevered bystand er actually paid the owner four dollars lor the privilege of digging three hours. lie was re warded bv the discovery of lour coppers. The cellar was lull of volunteer diggers from about ten a. m. until nightfall, at which time, a sulli cient excavation having been made, the own er proclaimed that no inure diggiug would be allowed. Weioiiino Bi-ttkr.—A peddler in the Highlands, having run short of butter, applied to a fanners wife for a supply. "How muckle div yon want ?" said she. "A pun will do," said, the peddler. "I canna inak ye a pun " replied the woman, I hea nae a pun'"weight." "Weel, what weight hae ye?" said he. "Twa pun," said the woman. "And what is the weight?" "Oh, it's jest the tangs." "Weel," said he "put one lig in the scale and tither oot, and that will be a pun' then." The woman did as requested, but when it was weighed, she looked doubtfully at the but ter, and said, "It looks a muckle pun." "Oh, it's all right, woman,"said the peddler, "how much is it?" "A saxpence," was the reply, which the peddler paid, snd departed rather hastily. H . IX. Recollect, the only entrance to his Office is No. 21, having no connection with his residence.con sequentlv no family interruption, so that on no ac count can any person hesitate applying at his office. DR. DIX boldly annert* (and it cannot be contradicted.except by Quacks, who will say or do any thine, even perjure themselves, to impose upon patients) that he IS the only regular graduate physician AD VERTISING IN BOSTON. SIXTEEN YEARS engaped in treatment of Special diseases, a fact so well known to manv Citizens.Publishers, Merchants, Hotel Proprietors. &c., that he is much recommend ed, and particularly to STRANGERS AND TRAVELLERS. To avoid and escajH· Imposition of Foreign and Na tive quacks, more numerous in Boston than other large cities, DR. L. DIX proudly refers to Professors and respectable Phvai ci»iis— many υι wuoin consult mm Hi critical cacc«, ! because of bis acknowledged skill and reputation, at tained through bo long experience, practice and ob servation. 1 AFFLICTED AND UNFORTUNATE ! be not robbed and add to your sufferings in being de ceived by the lying boasts, misrepresentations, false promises and pretensions of FOREIGN AND NATIVE QUACKS, who know little* of the nature and character of Spec ial disease*, and less an to their cure. .Some exhibit forged diplomas of Institutions or College*, which never existed in any part of the world: others ex hibit diplomas of the dead, how obtaiued, ui known; not only assuming and advertising in names of those inserted in the diplomas, but to further their imposi tion assume names of other most celebrated physi- 1 cians long since dead. Neither be deceived by QUACK NOSTRUM MAKERS, through false certificates and references, and recom mendations of their medicines by th*· (had, who can not expose or contradict them ; or who, besides, to further their imposition, copy from Medical books | much that is written of the qualities and effects of diiTerent herbs and plants, and ascribe all the same to their Tills, Extracts, Specifics.Ate., most of which, if not all, contain Mercury, because of the ancient belief of ite "curing everythii g," but now known to "kill more than is cured," and those not killed, constitutionally injured for life. IGNORANCE OF QUACK DOCTORS AND NOS TRUM MAKERS, Through the ignorance of the Quack Doctor, know ing no other remedy, lie relies upon Mercury, and gfves it to all his patients in pills, drops. &c., so the Nostrum Maker, equally ignorant, adds to his so called Extracts, Specific, Antidote, See., both reiving upon its effinits in curing a few in a hundred, "it is trumpeted in various ways throughout the land: but a i. as ! nothing is said of the balance: some of whom die, others grow worse, and are left to linger and suf fer tor months or years, until relieved or cured, it possible, by competent physicians. BUT ALL QUACKS ARE NOT IGNORANT. Notwithstanding the foregoing facts are known to some quack doctors and nostrum makers, yet, regard- | less of the life and health of others, there are those among them who will even perjure themselves, con tradicting giving mercury to their patients, or that it is contained iu their Nostrums, so that the "usual ! fee" may be obtained for professedly curing, or "the j dollar" or "fraction of it" may be obtained for the ι Nostrum. It ia thus that many are deceived also, and I uselessly spend large amounts'for experiments with ' quackery. DK. L DIX'S charges are very moderate. Poor Kiehartl'* Eye and Ear Water If a new and rare discovery, which is most wonder ul in its operations, putting to blush the old systems f treat meut, which have quite as often done harm s good. Below we give the certificate of Rev. P. S. Ienson. Pastor of the Broad Street Baptist Church, 'hiladelphia. If any one has doubts as to the value f this remedy, they may learn more of its practical alue by addressing a note of inquiry to Mr. II. Philadelphia. Oct. 17,1862. From injuries received in my right eye, when a oy, a chrouic inflammation had been produced, in ousequence of which 1 suffered constant martyr om. Every moment of my waking life was embit ered, and I was frequently unable to sleep at night. A variety of remedies had been resorted to with ut success, and I entertained the purpose, as a last esort.of having the ball taken out of its socket, in he hope of thus finding relief. In the meantime, most providentially, I noticed ne day in a shop window a bottle of POOR RICH LKD'S EYE WATER. 1 had never heard ot it be ore, but determined to try it, and did, with the most elightful results. In a very few days the painful rritation was removed ; 1 could bear the strongest ight. and went forth to the enjoyment of a new life, uow keep a bottle of it always in the house, and if ay eye seems at all disposed to annoy me, I give it a lose, and that is an end Df it. I would not be with· >ut it for any amount of mouey. I take occasion to ay, further, that my wife used to suffer severely at ; imes from protracted pain in aud over her eyes and j he has found Poor Richard's Eye Water* sov ereign specific in her case, giving her almost instant j elief. Grateful to God for the benefit that I have lersonally received, I cannot but commend the prep aration to all who have been sufferers like myself. P. 8.
