the tress. Fax, La, La.—A writer in a late number of All the Year Round lias discovered that the seeming nonsense choruses ot many old England ballads are in reality the remnants of the songs sung by the ancient Britons in the celebration of tlieir sun-worship. “Fal, la, la” is written in Welsh, “lal la,” fal mean ing a circle or sun, and la a day, and botti words expressing a completion ot a day. As the Druids marched around their stone cir cles, like those still discernible at Stonehenge and on the Sussex Dowus, they chained their meaningful chorus, ‘‘fal-la, fal-la” as the cods thay worshipped sank behind the western hills. So ‘‘Down, down, deny down” in the origi nal is ‘‘Dun, dun, daragan dun,” and it means “To the hill, to the oaks, to the bill, and was therelore a call to worship. The old Puritan poet, George Withers, used another ot these Drnidical choruses in one of his pleasant dit ties: There wan a law*, a lair one, As fair as e’er was seen, She was, iii'lee I, a rare one, Another Sheba queen; But fool, aa then I was, 1 thought she loveti me true. But now, alas, she's left me, ifal, lero, lero, loot The original of this refrain was “Fal, lear, luadh dh,” and it hailed the sun rising above the sea. “Tooral, iooral,” “High Uvlollie,” and many other of these apparently mean inglers burdens to old songs, have a similar curious origin.
