Her bold ambition, of no mortal f»ze, Does like fome Coloflean ftatuc rife, And hide its tow’ring forehead in the (kies. political* Where is our Goi>ertiment ?—It can hard ly be forgotten, that in the year 1793, when the calamities cf peftilence rendered it ne ceiTary to remove the offices of government out of the city of Philadelphia, great clam our was raifed by the democrats, becauic the president and heads of departmci > did not keep together in one place. VS'e were eve ry day informed of the amount of falary drawn by thefe officers as a compensation for devoting their time to the lcrvicc of the people, and yet, that they were on that cc canon io leparatea as to lender it extremely inconvenient to tranfabt bufinefs with them. I hey were accufed of deferting their polls $ abdicating the government ; cheating the public out of the amount of their falaries, etc. etc. We fiiould now' be glad to know of tht fe watchful guardians of the people’s rights, whether the duty of public officers have materially changed fince that time j whether their falaries have been reduced 5 or whether any new principle has been in troduced and lanctioned, exculing the of ficers of the adminiitration from devoting their time to the public. Unlcfs fome fuch change has taken place, how are we to ac count for the uniform abfence of almoft every public officer from the feat of govern ment during the recefs of congrefs ? There has not been a fingle fummer, fince Mr. Jelferfon came into power, that the prefi dent and heads of departments have not been difperfed into different and remote parts of the country, though they have nev er been driven away by the terrour of yel low fever. During the whole of the prefent fummer, the public mind has been agitated with a variety of important transactions, which required the continual vigilance of ‘jov -rn raent and on which it was the undoubted duty of the adminiitration, to give l'ome public information. Yet all that we have been able to hear from the man of the people is, that he has quietly retired to hif mountain where he remains as fnug, and as unconcerned, and as filent as though he had nothing to do but to receive his live and twenty thoufanu dollars a vear ; unlefs in deed, when he gets a letter from captain Lewis, with a prefent of prairie dogs or magpies *, then the official paper is fet to work, and the public are called to admire the wonders of Louifiana. But while no thing m*re interfiling occurs than the bloc kade of two or three of our ports ; or the failure of a negotiation fet on foot for the recovery of property of which our citizens have been plundered ; or for fettiing our title to a diilrifl of country fol which we have paid fifteen millions of dollars j or an allcdged order to l'eize and con fife ate our property according to the law cf nations; the intelligence is left to find its way to thole concerned through nevvfpapcrs, ex tracts cf letters, and uncertain rumours. Our merchants have recently been f rely emharrafled by a new and, as h* s been iup ; poled, illegal rcitiiftions upon their com merce. In luch cales’they wilh to confult the government, in the firtl p'ace to know, of ficially, the real (late of facts ; and in the fecond, to be informed whether any or what Heps will be taken for their prote&ion. Upon inquiring where fuch applications are to bemade, they learn that it is convenient to the pub ic officers, in jummer^ to have any government. It is true there is a pre fident fome wherein the mountains of Vir ginia ; a l'ecretary of Hate in Philadelphia ; a ftcretary of the treafury in the wellern parts of P nfvlvania, &c. &c. But in or der to do bulinefs it is ructfTuy that tbefe officers fliould confult together ; that there ffiould be an interchange of the informa tion which may be lodged in the refpe&ive uepartmenrs, as wt 11 as an interchange of fentiments and opinions refulting from that information. Every one mult perceive that nothing of this kind could take place in the prefent difperlcd condition of the adminis tration. 1 he i nly advantage therefore* which fve the pro' (< can derive from having a government during the fummer months if th t we have an t pportunity of fending ap plications to th Cify of Wafhington where* no doubt, they will fafdy rcpofii until it ma^ pleafe the adminiftration to return there to fpend the winter, and receive their fait* tthtiad tap. The pnvcrfui MAGIC of tie n:?rd ECONOMY. If we {hew that our nation is treated with difrefpett, fcorn, and infult ; th?t the American commerce has became a prey to every pirate ot freebooter ; that our fea port towns and harbours are blockaded > that our feamen are imprefled, fl »gged, and impnfoned ; that the cowardly .Spaniards, as well as the Englifh and French, infult our flag, capture our vefftls, and cuff and kick the American Tailors without any teem ing apprehenfion of confluences. If we view that thefe things are, and that they ! are becoming ever* day more and more in I tolerable—the confoling reply is* that the | internal duties are «.boli(hed, that there is ; no land tax, no cxpcniive navy ; that The : public debt is diminittiing, See. 6cc. This ftfeinating lullaby quiets the public mind. If we (hew that the conftitution of the gen eral government has been rent and man gled to anfwer party purpofes * that Vie* ginia governs the iJnton * that the influ ence of Newcngland is reducing to a cy pher—If we prove ail this, the magic force of the word tconotny mere than counteracts the whole. The t demagogues of the day have much reafort to fay with Peter Pindar, “ Economy is a very uftfjl b* For with this broom they fweep aw2y the cogent ar guments of their opponents as eafily as if they were cobwebs. Hart/ pap. Ltuifiand.—The fait mountain, the value of which our democrats had calculated to exceed fome thousands of times, the pticc to be paid for Louifiania, has already difap peared, and another more ferious evil now is threatened. It appears by the following extra£t, that a certain gentleman is author ised to fell lands within th« territory claim ed by rhe Empercur of Louifiana, the pro ceeds to be the property of the King of Spain. Who would not admire the wife ar rangements of Mr. Jefterfon and his friend2, when on the fame ground, we are “ erect ing ports of entry” and a Spamfh Agent if felling the toll, for “ the King his matter.” NEW-OR IIAI.'j, AUG.
