The Turnip Fly. In Englaml, whera the turnip is an im portant crop, there have been many “rem edies” applied for that destructive little in sect, tlie turnip lly. At a late meeting of the Royal Agricultural Society, Air. Ftsh cr 11 oh be, a member, presented the two following remedies which he -had used with great success : Ftnsr Receipt.—Take one bushel of fresh while gas ashes, or hue wood ashes may bn used instead of gas ashes; I bush el of fresh lime-from the kiln; 6 lbs. of sulphur; 10 Ihs. ol soot; to be well mix ed together, and got to a? fine a powder as possible, so that it may adhere to the voting plant. This is sufficient for two acres tthen drilled 27 inches, to be applied early in the morning when the dew is on the leaf, with a broadcast machine orsprink led with the hand carefully over the rows. If the fly continues troublesome, the pro cess should he repeated, always when the plant is dump, in I ght land it is best to make the drills on the flat, the ground be ing well prepared to receive the seed. SEctNn Receipt.—Take I t lbs. of sulphur; 1 bushel of (r sh lime; 2 bush els of road scrapings, ortubslance of mold where road scrapings cannot per acre, mix , together a few days before it is used, applied very eatly in the morn ing or late at night, in the same manner as '"directed in No. 1, using the horse hoe im mediiptly after. Harvksting Beans—jA correspon dent oi the Uural JYew Yorker gives his mode of stacking and drying beans as fol lows ; *•1 use two slakes instead of one, seven or eight fi?ct long and from one and a half to two inches apart; put a witiie on the stakes.li foot or eighteen inches from the 'ground ; take a small hantlf. 1 of beans and lay the ro.ts between the stakes so far through that the tops will not rfaclt the 'ground; then a bunch on the other side in the same why; After this the roots, Only should come between the stakes, anti the roots of each bunch should be laid at right angles with (hose of the hunch prece ding. When within a foot of the top of the stakes put on another withe, drawing the stakes together to hug the roots close ly, then fill up With beans, as before, to the top; then take two bunches of beans, tie the roots together and lay astride the top, and it is finished. Beans slacked in this way will never mold, as they often will when stack ed around oue slake. They should be stacked as soon as pulled, and alway.s"bun dled by the roots. When the slacks are thoroughly dry, they may he taken to the barn whole, pulling the stakes from the ground.” Premium Pickup.. — A lady friend sends us the following recipe, which she Tias tried and can safely recommend: Pul your mangoes in strong brine for two days ; then boil the brine, and pour it on them again, very hot; repeat it twice; after which pour on boiling vine gar and water mixed in equal quantities, three successive limes, with intervals of two days—making six scalds in all. To a three-gallon jar of mangoes, take 1 tea-cup of black pepper, 1 ten-cup ol allspice, 1} tea-enps of ginger, J ounce of mace, ounce of cloves; beat all, but not fine. Take 1 head of raw cabbage, 8 'onions chopped fine, i? lea-cupsuf scraped horse radish, I quart of mustard seed.— Take half the spice alter they are beaten, and mix with the latter ingredients, also 3 cups of brown sugar; besides, pul one tea-spoonful of sugar in each mango be fore you put in the stuffing. It takes 5 lbs. of sugar for a ihret-galloti jar, the balance of the sugar mix with the spice and vinegar enough to cover the pickles. Pour on hot. Preserving Hams through Sum mer.—Make a number of cotton hags, a little larger than your hauls ; after the hams arc: well smoked, place them in the bags; then get tho best, kird of sweet, well-made hay, cut it with a knife, and with your hands press it well around the hams in the bag ; tie the bags with good strings, put on a card of the year to show their ge, and hang them up in a garret or some dry room, and they will hang live years, and will he heller for boiling than on the day you hung them up. This method costs but little, and the bags will last for ty years. No flies or bugs will trouble the hams if if the hay is pressed well around them; the sweating of the hams will be taken up by the hay, and the hay will imparl a line fla vor to the hams. • Ai.kat.ine Stains. —Theseare fire op posite of acid’ stains—they change vegeta ble blues to green, red to violet, green to yellow, to brown, and annaio to red.— They are to be treated with acids. The writer once had a new pair of dark-cloth pantaloons changed to alight brown below the knees, by riding on a load of fresh lime in a storm. Oh, you have ruined your clothes?” were the exclamations; but he deliberately procured a cup of vin egar, and sponging the cloth gradually, completely restored the color, and then again sponging ofl the compound, left them as good as before. Fine Mead.— Beat to a strong froth the whites of three eggs, and mix them with six gallons of water; sixteen quarts of strained bony ; and yellow rind of two doxen large lemons, pared very thin Boil all together, during three-quarters of an hour; skimming it will. Then put it into a tub; and when lukewarm add three tibiespoons of tire best fresh yeast. — Cover it and leave it to ferment. When it has done working transfer it to a bar rel, with the lemon-peel in lire bottom.— Let it stand six months, then bottle it. D., Editor of the Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, and Christian Chronicle, Philadelphia. Although not disposed to favor or recommend Patent Medicines in general, through distrust Of their ingredients and effects, I yet know of no sufficient reasons why a man may not testify to the benefits he believes himself to have received from any simple preparation, in the hope that be may thus contribute to tbe benefit of others. I do this the more readily in regard to Hoof land’s German Bitters, prepared by. Dr. C. M. Jackson, of this city, because I was prejudiced against them for many years, under the Impres sion that they were chiefly an alcoholic mixluri. I am indebted to my friend, Ruben Shumaker, j Esq., for (lie removal of this prejudice by proper j tests, and fur encouragement to try them, when i suffering from grett and long-continued debility, | The use of three bottles of these flitters at ihe be- I ginning of the present year, was followed by evi dent rebel and restoration lo a. degree of bodily | and mental vigor which I bad not felt for six [ months before, aftd had almost despaired of re gaining.
