IAJLROAP ACCIDENT.—Quite an acci dent occurred on the Baltimore and Ohio Babroad, about four miles west of Cumber land, on Thursday eveniug last, by which a dniaago of several thousand dollars was eus taincd. Whilo a coal train was in rapid mo tion the engine was thrown off tho track, and the cent cars, seven in number, were violently Idled upon one another, making a perfect tns3 of luins. The engine was deeply im bedded in tho mud, and considerably in jured. Tho tender was a complete wreck. The engineer was thrown a distance of twenty or Xweuty-five feet, but the injuries be re eeived are not considered dangerous. He wae brought to.thi i city insensible, and the ncit day-was carried to Baltimore. His head wee acverely cut, and portions of bis body badly bruised. The fireman sprang from the en gine, and escapeil with no other injury than a sprained ancle. The express train, from Wheeling, duo that evening, was detained for seven or eight hours, until a track was laid around the ruins. All the obstnistione were removed during the next day, and on Monday, the engine was carried to the Com pany'! work shops at Martinsburg, to be re paired. TELEGRAPH LINE. —It ia in contem plation to oouatruct a telegraph along the line of tho Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad, from Lynn's wharf, in this city, to Lonaconing, a distance of fifteen or twenty miles. Wo understand that it is the design to build the telegraph right away, in order to afford a more rapid meant of communica tion between the varioue companies engaged in mining coal and their agents in this city, and thus facilitate their business of raining and ehipping ihe "black diamonds." This is a stop in the right direction, and it mint he a source of gratification to the pooplo of this region, -.rim '"ore or less directly or indirectly interested in the coal trade, to know that it is so rspidly augmenting as to require a medium of lightuing communica tion to satisfy its wants. We chronicla this evidence of increasing prosperity in the coal trade with great pleasure, and hope our mining frionde will keep us regularly advised of their operations, that we may keep tho pihi'.tr infn-r.ieH concerning this very impor tant interest of Western Maryland. A NEW l'Roesea FOR MANUIACTU*ISO LEATHHR. —Messrs McCleary and Itabold, of this city, have purchased a lot on Mechanic •treat, with the view of erecting an establish ment lor the manufacture of leather, under a new process, iu which bark is entirely dis pensed with. We aro informed that hides tanned by this process have been compared with the best Kngliih and American leather, and found equal iu alt respects. Tke advan tages consist in the economy and rapidity with which the operation is performed, it re quiring hut aljout four weeks to convert a hide ir.te leather of a superior quality. Tho author of this new process is about getting out a patent for hie invention. A MISTAICB. —In tbo local columns of our Baltimore cotemporary, th# Clipper, ul Thursday hist, we find a slight error. In the issue of that day, in alluding to the dying request of the four condemned criminals, Gambril), Cropps, Carrie and the negro man, Cypliui, not to be hung in shrouda, the in stance of Frederick Miller, who wae hung here some years sgo for tho murder of Dr. Hadel, Is cited '■o show that cases have oc curred in which men have expiated their crimes upon the gallows without wearing a shroud. We are informed by seToral who witnessed the execution that this is a mistake. Miller wore a shroud, and was robed in the usual liahilinems of the grave. FIRE. —On Saturday eveuing last the ringing of the tiro bells disturbed tho usual quiet of our cey, and brought together a number of onr citizens. The various fire companies were promptly at the scene of the fire, Mr. John Ball's foundry, and soon suc ceeded in extingpichiug it. The fire was in side of the building, and tho dames were quenched before damage of any consequence was done. After it wae all over the fire cornpcr.. s exercised the capacity of their en gines to throw water, to the infinite Amuse ment of the little juveniles. DISTRESSING AFFAIR. —One of those un fortunate occurrences which sometimes trans pire in the best regulated communities, came off in our quiet little town on Monday night of last week, resulting in tho death of JAMES MII.I.EH, residing near town, and aged about 27 yoars. The row occurred at the Fountain Hotel, on tho occasion of an oyster supper as spoken of in our last week's issue, a gen eral fight ensued after the repast among some six or seven young men, and Millar was stab bed in the abdomen, which wound caused his death after lingering until Monday last. On the afternoon after his death, Drs. War field , Mathias and lleriitg wore summoned before the Coroner's Jury to make an autop sy of the case. Upon examination, it was found that tho wound extended into tlio caY ity of tho abdomen, Wounding portions ol the small intestines, and producing extreme ■inflammation through tho whole track oftiie bowels. Tho part of the intestine that was wounded, together with several incites adjoin ing, was impacted in tho wound, thereby preventing the contents from escaping into the abdominal cavity. This circumstance, it is supposed, prolonged the unfortunate man's life for some daye. MRI.ANCHOI.LT EVENT.—It is our painful duly to anuounce the death of Mr. Baby lon, wife of John Babylon, Uniontown, ol this Cjunty, occasioned by violence. CIRCUIT COURT. —Tho case of Joseph A Lechlidor, indicted for Forgery, has occupied the Court since our last report of proceedings The testimony in the case was closed on Fri day, and on Saturday the jury rendered s verdict of "not guilty". On Monday, the case of Sam Francis, a free negro, charged with the murder of a co lored hoy, was taken tip, and after a short time, a Jury was impanielled. After sever al witnesses had been examined on the part of the State, it was evident that, tho evidence was not sufficient to convict tho prisoner ol 'murder in the first degree,' and the State abandoned that count, and submitted the ense without argument to the Jury on th second count. The Jury, without going out of tho box, rendered a verdict of "Guilty of Murder in the second degreo." Tito Court, thereupon, sentenced Sam Francis to tho Penitentiary for tho terra of 17 years and 6 months. A FALL, AND WONDERFUL ESCAPE. —Mr. Win. E.
