SENTINEL Thursday, Novtmbar 5, 1959 A8 Cabin John-Brookmont ‘No Simple Answer to Delinquency’ By Naomi (Sandy) Rovner OLiver 6-8863 “Anybody who comes up with a nice, neat, simple answer to the problem of juvenile delin quency must be a nut.” Maurice O. Hunt, Chief of the Bureau of Child Welfare of the Maryland State Department of Public Wel fare declared last week at a meeting of the 7-3 Democratic Women’s Club. Mr. Hunt, who is also execu tive director of the Maryland Commission for the Prevention and Treatment of Juvenile De linquency, warned that delin quency is on the increase among the “more advantaged” groups as well as in rural areas. He pointed to “city-type gangs” in several small Eastern Shore towns as indication that Mary land was no exception to this country-wide trend. Citing differences of opinion concerning methods and tech niques for dealing with the problem, as well as lack of skilled workers and lack of ad equate salaries to attract po tential skilled workers into the field as major stumbling blocks In the control of juvenile delin quency, Mr. Hunt agreed that some basic causes may lie with in the structure of our society. He pointed to a continuing need for research and study on the subject but declared that "now we want to put into practice what we already know.” He emphasized that a large number of potential delinquents could be straightened out early in the game IF there were adequate case workers and family guid ance specialists to work with in dividual families on a personal basis and IF these children could be brought to the atten tion of such specialists in time. He suggested that the schools could be of great value in this aspect of the probelm. Moreover, Mr. Hunt advo cated that every police force have one of its staff specially trained to handle juveniles who become police problems with special rules for their treatment.
