Krafts, Democrats Host Parties
By Kathleen Leary
Woman’s Editor
Alva and Lester Kraft re
cently entertained at what they
called a “friendly” cocktail
buffet. The Saturday evening
fete may have been the last
such affair they host at 4209
Bradley la., Chevy Chase, for
the house is up for sale and
they have an option to buy a
bigger place on Kalarama rd.
Many of their guests were
artists and associates at the
National Academy of Art,
which the Krafts own and di
rect.
A student, -Madame Shas
hani was there with her hus
band, Brig. Gen. Akbar Shas
hani, military and air attache
to Iran, and their neice, Miss
Golnar Bhaktiar, also a stu
dent. Young Golnar, a raven
haired beauty, is the cousin of
the former Queen Soroya of
Iran.
Painter Joseph Shepherd,
first prize winner at a recent
Corcoron Gallery Art show,
came over from Baltimore with
his wife, Carol.
Other guests were Dr. and
Mrs. Samuel Dodek, Mr. and
Mrs. James W. Cobb, John
Chapman Lewis, head of the
fine arts department at the
Art Academy; Dr. and Mrs.
Mangasarian, sculptress Maii
anthe Karaberi, Mr. and Mrs.
John Balas. Mrs. Irene Eno,
head of interior design at the
Academy and Major William
Clifford (ret.), head of the ad
vertising art department.
Lester Kraft, former Mont
gomery County Judge, was
talking about his three-week
trip to Alcapulco and Cuer
nevaca, Mexico. Daughter
Karen, a senior at Holton Arms,
was also present along with
Miss Carmen Trujillo of Guate
mala, a 10th grader at Holton
Arms, who makes her home
with the Krafts.
Everyone was Interested In
the collection of paintings the
Krafts have acquired since tak
ing over the art school. The big
attention-getter, however, was
Alva’s statue of the Greek
goddess of love and beauty,
Aphrodite. The floor under the
work of art was especially
shored to hold the 200-pound
piece of sculpture.
The buffet featured cold
sliced turkey and ham, jumbo
steamed shrimp, tossed garden
and potato salad.
