Tips for Shoppers
Gifts, Gadgets, Gimmicks and Glamor
Abound in Local Shops This Year...
By Lila Thomson
GIFTING SEASON In this
area is going full tilt . . . what
with Christmas less than two
weeks away. Local merchants
are venturing to say when De
cember 24 rolls around they
will have chalked up gains over
last year which will be sub
stantial. Unusual increases are
believed due to this fact: Local
shops have larger selections
than ever before and customers,
generally, are finding It easier
and more profitable to shop at
home.
IN THE RUSH AND PUSH,
If you’ve planned to get the old
television set in order for those
coming special Christmas pro
grams . . . and have put it off
until now . . . Alpha Radio and
Television Service Company,
Inc., of Rockville, specializes in
"quality" service, well-trained
technicians and the kind of
“dealing” that allows you to
feel confident you’ve had the
best. Ray Hampton told us his
firm uses only nationally adver
tised repair parts, gives custom
ers itemized statements show
ing exactly what has happened
and for how much, and does
the work in your home when
ever it can be done there. Fur
ther more, the firm (with of
fice and shop at 232 E. Mont
gomery Avenue) stands solidly
behind every Job. Know too,
personnel of Alpha Radio and
TV and the people are very
pleasant and capable people to
deal with. If you’re in need of
TV repair service, call them at
GA. 4-9466. and say we sent you.
SIDNEY AND ANN MARX
who operate that altogether
charming and unique Happy
House Gift Slop down In Con
gressional Shopping Plaza have
added “something new” this
year to an already distinguished
line of gift wares. We mean
(In case you haven’t seen it)
costume jewelry with a glam
orous and different look. You’ll
love It. And have you seen
their charming place mats of
plasticized linen and those
striped metal waste baskets
which add so much to bathroom
decor? We saw striped plastic
“glasses” there, too, to match
the waste baskets. And do see
their choice stock of brass and
copper . . . and the most fas
cinating line of wooden ware
we’ve seen in some time . . .
•specially the salad and nut
bowls. Whether you go to buy
or browse, you’ll enjoy the gay
smart decor of the shop and
you’ll find that the Marx’—
Sidney and Ann—are “fun
people” to do business with.
TOWN AND COUNTRY
ELECTRIC in Rockville, as you
probably know, handle Hoover
Vacuum cleaners In these parts
•, . but what we really want to
tell you about Is the Hoover
“miniature” which comes free
when the “adult” cleaner is
purchased. The Hoover minia
ture is a wonderful reproduc
tion of the large cleaners de
signed especially for little girls
who want to play cleaning
house. It operates on flash light
batteries, there’s a light on the
front, it buzzes Just like “moth
er’s” and actually picks up dirt.
Do look, even if you don’t buy.
And don’t forget your new RCA
Victor color TV should come
State Utilizes
New Formula for
Driver’s Permits
Renewal dates for Maryland
operator’s permits will, after
January L 1961, be determined
by a new method according to
John R. Jewell, commissioner
of motor vehicles.
A new state law' says that
persons who were born in an
odd-numbered year will hence
forth renew their permits every
two years in an odd-numbered
year.
The same is true for persons
born in even years, who will
now renew their permits in
even years.
The Department of Motor Ve
hicles has mailed renewal ap
plications to those persons born
in January of an odd year
whose present licenses are more
than a year old.
The remainder of the license
renewal procedure remains the
same, including the $2 fee.

from Town and Country. While
we’re at it. . . and while you’re
at it . . . there’s a wonderful
selection of Hi-Fi and Stereo
record players at Town and
Country—including that fabu
lous big Job called the “home
entertainment center." It in
cludes TV, radio and record
player and is beautifully de
signed.
FOR ESPECIALLY GLAM
OROUS robes and lounge wear
. . . just wait until you see the
ones at Worih’s-on-the-Pike. Ask
to see those designed by Evelyn
Pearson, Flobert and Loungee
. . . they’re especially beautiful.
MODERN FURNITURE
COMPANY in Rockville has
two "carry home” specials this
week which will make charm
ing Christmas presents . . .
namely ... an electric wall
clock designed along Colonial
lines that hangs from a gold
finished eagle. Then there’s an
electric "chanticleer” hurricane
lamp people will have about.
Incidentally, the clock is priced
under five dollors and the
lamp is under three.
IF YOU HAVE a shopping
problem for teenagers on your
Christmas list ... do shop
Young Colony on Court House
Square. Young Colony modest
ly says “everything for teens”
but this, by no means, tells thS
story. We’ll let you do your own
looking in the dress, coat and
sweater departments. What we
want to rave about are the
charming and unusual gadgets
and gimmicks on Young Col
ony’s accessories bar. Do see
the silver friendship rings and.
most especially, the over-sized
neck pendants on a chain which
currently “send” young ladies
of fashion. There are wonder
ful bangle bracelets, coin neck
laces, coin belts, and out-of-this
world bookmarks. The one
which took our shopping eye
was a tiny mousQ, with a Jew
eled eye. The tail is used to
mark-the-place. Nice line of
handbags designed for partic
ular gals who want the latest,
and wonderfully smart leather
belts are there, too.
C HIL DR E N’S CENTER.
Court House Square, has large
foam rubber-filled Teddy Bears
that stand 30 inches high for
less than five dollars. Best of
all, they’re the cuddly, drag
around kind that are completely
washable.
LOOKING FOR CAMERAS
and camera supplies? And
where else will you find so
much, so many, and so reason
ably as those you will find at
Transcolor Photo Center on
North Washington St.? We’ll
tell you ... no place. Go look.

BEN FRANKLIN STORE in
Gaithersburg has a wonderful
selection of gift wrappings, in
cluding cute but inexpensive
gadgets and ties to give your
packages that Oh-and-Ah look.
Nice, easy place to shop. too.
TEARING YOUR HAIR
about gifts for the men on your
shopping list? Restrain yourself
and stop by Larry Alan’s, North
Washington Street Shopping
Center. Very smart shop, you
know and chock-full of the
things men like to find under
the Christmas Tree... we mean
the sort of merchandise you see
advertised in those veddy-veddy
smart magazines for males.
And do see the “checkered”
vests (plain ones, too) in wool
and corduroy. You can find the
right gifts for "young gentle
men” and boys there, too . . .
and you can look and look and
buy without salespeople heck
ling you except when you want
to be heckled and helped. Try
shopping Larry Alan’s . . .
you’ll be glad you did.
LOOKING FOR ART SUP
PLIES? Then, look no further.
Color Center on Court House
Square has a complete line for
adult or young artists. You’ll
find those paint-by-number sets
there also.
THE THREE MURPHY
STORES in this area . . . E.
Montgomery Ave., Twinbrook
Shopping Center, and Congres
sional Shopping Plaza are prac
tially small dapartment stores
at this season of the year . . ,
chock-full . . . just chock-full,
that's all. Wonderful toy de
partments, and we mention, in
particular, the really excellent
selection of games for young
sters and grown-up youngsters,
too. If you have games on your
mind and on your list . . . you
can’t do better than to shop
Murphy’s.

WOOL SHIRTS? The Quality
Shop on East Montgomery
(across from High’s) has stacks
and stacks. You can find Pio
neer belts and suspenders there,
. . . plus the smiling, friendly
service that has made the Qual
ity Shop an institution in these
parts for many years.
AND WHILE WE HATE TO
BE CRASS about this thing,
when it comes to gift shopping,
why not think of giving the
gift that repeats 52 times a
year? We mean the Montgom
ery County Sentinel. Call us at
GA. 4-7700 and we’ll be happy
to send it wherever you want it
sent . . . with a gift card.
COLORFUL CERAMICS, you
know, planters, ash trays, dec
orative pieces, dozens and doz
ens of them, are available at
W. T. Grants. And, if you plan
to dress up the house for Christ
mas with new curtains or dra
peries. march yourself to
Grant’s emporium of trade and
see window finery that will
amaze you. Everything from
tailored nylon panels to extra,
full, large dotted criss-cross cur
tains. In the matter of dra
peries. you’ll find them from
shorties to draw-drapes. And
best of all you’ll find “Edna.”
We recommend “Edna,” the
very nice gal at Grants who
can recite drapery and curtains
facts like an encyclopedia, as
the expert to consult on what
will do what in the matter of
window dressery.
JACMAR'S on North Wash
ington Street is closing out its
large gift wares department in
order to make room for more
and more furniture. Therefore,
(and don’t miss it) all costume
jewelry, wallets and similar
gadgets are reduced to half-,
price. There are large “glamor”
rings which will delight your
eyes and your budget.
GIVING CLOTHING this
year? At Millers’ on North
Washington Street, you’ll run
headlong into a whole store of
women’s and children’s wear so
reasonably priced you won’t be
lieve it. Nice accessories, too,
including couorful gay woolen
gloves, handbags, scarves and
belts. . . . L. T.
