Battle After
Wrecking PG
Having spent last week
wrecking the Prince Georges
County Teams, tjie Mont
gomery County schools will
turn upon each other in Bi-
County and Montgomery
County League games to
night.
Richard Montgomery will face
B-CC, always a dangerous club
at home, Blair plays at North
wood, and surprising Wheaton
visits Walter Johnson. All
games are scheduled for 8:30.
The three games conclude
activities for the six teams until
after New Year’s, except for the
Richard Montgomery • Gaithers
burg battle on December 30, and
a smattering of alumni games.
Blair Favored
Blair will be a heavy favorite
to win the first time at North
wood. The two schools have
met four times in basketball,
and Blair has won only once,
38-35, last year at home. This
year, however, the Indians are
having their troubles, and were
upset by Gaithersburg, 54-53,
after an opening victory over
B-CC.
The Blazers were not In their
best form beating Northwestern,
45-28, last Friday, but Coach
Eddie Morffat has enough good
ball players to substitute freely
In hopes of finding a winning
combination.
Big Bob Windsor got into foul
trouble early against the Wild
cats, and George Davis had an
off night, but Jim Wendt and
Eddie Reynolds took their places
and did a good job. These two
combined with slick Sonny Jack
son, Gary Goubeau, and Jim
O’Neil to spark a Blair rally in
the last quarter which won the
game.
Jackson, Reynolds, and Davis
were especially effective steal
ing the ball and preventing the
Wildcats from setting up their
plays.
Goubeau did an excellent job
on the backboards with 11 re
bounds, and received surprising
help from O’Neil. O'Neil normal
ly an outside man, grabbed nine
rebounds.
Hope For Upset
Richard Montgomery upset
B-CC, 51-50 last year at B-CC,
one of two losses the County
champs suffered in County play.
The Barons would like nothing
better than to throw a crimp in
the plans of the high-flying
Rockets.
As expected, Kenny Doane
has been the high scorer for the
Rockets with 59 points in the
first three games. Don Hoage,
the only remaining B-CC starter
from last year, and Ed Austin,
who proved a valuable substi-
tute late in the season, are ex
pected to head the Barons’ at
tack.

Northwood in Opener
It took two years to do it, but Gaithersburg got the
satisfaction of knocking off one of the larger Montgomery
County schools last week, when the Trojans came from
behind in the last minute of play to nip perennially power
ful Northwood. i
On a jump shot In the last 20

back Jimmy Wal'd, in the
Trojans’ win, 54-53, last Friday
in Gaithersburg’s opener on its
own court.
Northwood finished second in
both the Bi-County and Mont
gomery County for the past two
seasons. Last season Gaithers
burg lost 11 straight in its first
year of full competition against
counties clashed head-on In
eight games on Thursday and
Friday, and Montgomery schools
won all eight.
Richard Montgomery, B-CC,
and Wheaton all grabbed two
victories each, and Blair and
Walter Johnson won single
games.
Bladensburg, last season’s
State Champs and the strongest
of the Prince Georges teams
again this season found its
hopes of repeating as league
champion badly shaken by two
losses, 64-63 to RMHS on Thurs
day and 68-56 to Wheaton Fri
day. Both defeats came on the
Mustangs’ home court.
Suitland was trounced by
Wheaton and Walter Johnson,
and Northwestern was beaten
by B-CC and Blair.
Richard Montgomery had no
trouble defeating High Point,
74-49, Friday, and B-CC also de
feated Oxon Hill.
The teams from Prince
Georges had a chance to re
deem themselves Tuesday after
the Sentinel went to press In
five games in Bi-County play.

After Ward put Gaithersburg
ahead, Northwood had seven
shots, but was unable to tie it
up. Ward led the scorers with
19 points and Leon Taylor had
] 18 for the winners.
If the fact that the Indians
l got all those shots in the last 20
seconds gives you an idea that
Gaithersburg lacks a strong re
bounder, you’ll get plenty of
| sympathy from Coach Pat Mc-
Carthy.
“We can move and shoot with
the schools we play,” McCarthy
said, “but the rebounds hurt.
John Wolfe at 6-foot-2 is the tall
est man we have.”
Even without the rebounds,
McCarthy was very pleased with
his team's performance, and
especially the play of Ward and
Taylor. Ward, a 5-foot-ll junior
who earned a letter last year,
sets the plays. He is a smart
player with quick hands, his
j only fault is lack of speed,
j Taylor, who came from
'Carver, has fitted in very well
; with Gaithersburg’s complicated

Wolfe, another letterman, is

Wheaton Earns Respect
After Bladensburg Win
By Jim Cawood
Sports Writer
When Wheaton takes the floor tonight at 8:30 at
Walter Johnson, onlookers and WJ players will have a new
respect for the Knights, which was not there a week ago.
The Knights, a young and in
experienced club, were not rated
very high before the season be
gan, and they lived up to that
early billing by losing their
opener to veteran Richard Mont
gomery by 20 points.
Last week, however, Coach
Dor, Drown’s athletes breezed by
Suitland, 63-38, and upset Blad
ensburg in a convincing 68-56
manner Friday night on the
Mustangs’ court.
This doesn’t ■'necessarily mean
that Wheaton is going to sweep
the county, especially since
Ronnie Andre, the leading
scorer, will be lost until after
Christmas because of a very
badly sprained ankle.
“It’s too early to say how
good we are,” Drown comment
ed. “We played good, hard-hit
ting ball against Bladensburg,
but we were ragged. We were
stealing the ball and the losing
it again almost immediately.”
Still, the Knights are far
ahead of schedule, despite the
loss of four starters, Mel Case,
Joe Brensike, Paul Cullen and
Doug Wice from last season.
The players mainly respon
sible for the Knights’ success
have been two senior veterans,
Jitn Snowden and Joe Linz, and
four juniors from the JV,
Andre, Dick Witmer, Kerry Kel
py and Fred Karnes.

Andre, the top scorer on the
JV last year, has continued his
hot hand. He posted 27 points
against the Mustangs, but came
down the wrong way on his
ankle in the fourth period and
has been taking whirlpool
treatments to reduce the swell
ing.
“He’s as good a shooter as we
have,” Drown says of Andre.
“His only trouble has been fit
ting into this crazy type of de
fense we play.”
Drown’s “crazy defense,” as
he describes it, is a man-for
man press that was used all but
the last two minutes against
Bladensburg. Kelpy, a 5-foot-8
junior like Andre, has been
especially proficient playing it.
“Kelpy did a good job help
ing out on Tommy Barrett,”
Drown said. “I had Linz on
Barrett normally, but Kelpy
went over to help out whenever
Barrett got the ball.”
Barrett was held to 11 points.
For a change the Knights

have good overall height. Wit
mer and Karnes are both 6-foot
-4 and Snowden is 6-foot-2.
Drown, who is not known for
being over generous with his
praise, rates Witmer as poten
tially the best big man he has
had. Witmer did a fine job re
bounding against Bladensburg
and RMHS, and was especially
effective blocking shots against
the Rockets.
Snowden is not rated as a
good scorer, but he is very ag
gressive under the boards.
Karnes played very well in
Wheaton’s first two games, then
sat out the Bladensburg game
with a virus.
Last year the Knights depend
ed on Mel Case. This season
should be a different story in
that respect.
“Everybody has to get 10
points each this year,” Drown
