Jane Pughe Chosen
For Study in Finland
Miss Jane Pughe, daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. George Pughe of
Washington Grove, was selected
as the representative for the
International School Program to
go to Finland for the summer
session. She'will sail from Mon
treal on the M. S. Seven Seas
in June. In Finland she will be
living with the family of a high
school principal while attending
the school session. The Ameri
can Field Service is responsible
for the program, and this is the
first year for Gaithersburg
High to participate. The local
chapter is supported by stu
dents and several community
service clubs.

Mrs. Willard J. Erickson, jr.,
the former Susan Webb, and
her two daughters, Cathy and
Carol, have been visiting her
parents, Captain and Mrs. J. C.
Webb of Chilly Hills Farm. She
has returned to her home at
Mt. Holly, N. J.

Music lovers will have a rare
opportunity to hear some fine
music when the Peabody Wind
Ensemble performs at the Jun
ior High School on Tuesday,
May 2, at 8:30. There is no
charge, to students and the nom
inal charge of 50 cents for
adults.

home from St. Mary’s Seminary
and had as her guest, Miss Anne
McClaughay.

The Methodist Men’s Group
of Washington Grove meet to
night at the church. Newly
elected officers are James
Stang, president; Jacob Carter,
secretary; Russell Pope, treas
urer. Program chairman is Les
lie Frye.
Mr. Stang, Mr. Frey and Mr.
Carter recently attended the
Conference at the Methodist
Men’s Rally in Baltimore. A
number of members of the As
buby Methodist Home went with
them.

The Gaithersburg Elementary
School’s new music interest cen
ter was recently introduced to
parents by Mrs. Best’s fifth
grade class. This was the first
of a series of workshops
planned by the music director,
Mrs. Toby. Mrs. Marian Wright,
principal, and Dr. Charles Horn,
music supervisor, were also
present.

The Washington Grove Wom
an’s Club luncheon was held
last Thursday at the clubhouse.
Helmut Freitsch, an exchange
student at Gaithersburg High,
gave a very stimulating talk of
life in Germany. The members
expressed their appreciation by
presenting the young man with
an autographed copy of Presi
dent Kennedy’s book, “Strategy
for Peace.”

Scouter Weekly Digest Richard
Schlenker was given recogni
tion for his work in Scouting.
Mr. Schlenker heads a staff of
18 neighborhood commissioners
who provide leadership for 50
Scout units. Dick is a native
of Pennsylvania and came to
this area in 1941. He is em
ployed by the C&P Telephone
Company of Md., and is a Rul
ing Elder in the Presbyterian
Church. His avocation in addi
tion to Scouting is as Director
of Music at the Wheaton Pres
byterian Church.
Dick was a Scout as a boy
and has served as Pack Com
mitteeman and Neighborhood
Commissioner before being se
lected as the Assistant District
Commissioner last year.
He holds the Scouter Train
ing Award, the Honor Arrow
head Award, and Wood Badge
Training.
