On the Farm Front Reg. U. S. Pat. Off. By Gaylord P. Godwin United Press International WASHINGTON (UPI) The Agriculture Department has warned potato growers to re vise downward their planting in tentions for the late summer and big fall crops or suffer possible loss of income. If growers plant all the spuds they have indicated they would, the department said a substan tial surplus of potatoes likely would result. This would cause low prices to producers. Most years since the early 1950 s potato growers in the late summer and fall states have planted close to the acreage in dicated in March 1 intention re ports. This year the reports in dicate that growers intend to plant 7 percent more acreage than last year. Hie department said the March 1 intended acreage, with near average yields, likely would result in a potato sur plus. Department economists writ ing in “The Vegetable Situa tion” recommend that growers plant no more acreage to late summe. potatoes than last year, and 5 percent less acreage to fall potatoes. Cold, wet weather caused j some damage and retarded growth of spring crops in the Southeast. Frost on March 10- 11 hit crops in the Everglades section of Florida, and high winds in early March caused some damage to Texas vege tables. The growing season In California and Arizona, how ever. was generally favorable. Early supplies from these areas tended to compensate to some extent for delayed harvest in the Southeast. Thu department said early supplies o f Spring vegetables j will pick up rapidly during the next few weeks as additional areas begin harvesting in vol ume. If the pattern of harvesting is more normal than last year, when harvesting in many areas was seriously delayed, both farm and retail prices during the next four to six weeks may average somewhat below the high levels of a year earlier, the department said. According to intentions re ports, growers plan to plant about the same acreage to sweet potatoes this year as last.
