In all probability the chief thing that happened behind closed doors when the President talked with De Gaulle, Khrush chev and Macmillan was sub stantially a restatement of each country's known position, known to each foreign leader, known to Kennedy, and known to most people who read the newspapers. Then why bother? Well, a president must bother in these times. As Kennedy remarked soberly at a press luncheon in Paris last week, the United , States is now within easy range : of Soviet missiles bearing hydro gen bombs. Any fair-sized i hydrogen bomb, just one, could wipe out something the size of New York City. He did not say it in any spirit of resignation or appeasement. He said it as a fact that had to be faced by our side, just as the other side must remember that the Strategic Air Command could do the same to Moscow and with probably more pre cision. This planet of ours is becom ing the size of a peanut. The power that survives will be the one which stays strongest and sells its wares most vigorously, just as in any business enter prise. Our forte is enormous strength. Our need, with Khrushchev flying hither and yon or sending his open or se cret agents to places he cannot make, is to send our best sales man. Even the best salesman can not make a deal everytlme he raps on a customer’s door. But if he is decent and clear and has a “pitch" that rings true, he is bound to make It tougher for a bruaquer, brawlier type to sell his goods at that house. Kennedy hoped to leave these things to his ambassadors In tjie field. But it just cannot be done. An ambassador has no way ,of reaching the people of the coun try to which he is assigned;,in fact, that’s frowned upon by the local government and even the State Department. So President must go and then he must go again. Over the lopg run, he will show a profit. sfc • FUEL OIL • READING COAL • LUMBER • Building Supplies THOS. W.
