thesda. chairman of the Amer
ican Red Cross Gray Lady Vol
unteers at Suburban Hospital,
has announced that classes for
new recruits for Gray Lady ser
vice at Suburban will be held at
the hospital on Oct. 12 and 14,
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
Applicants should register at
the American Red Cross Chap
ter House. 2020 East West
Highway, Silver Spring, no lat
er than Oct. 4.
Previous hospital experience
is not required, but candidates
must be within the ages of 18
and 35. Those interested in day
duty should plan to attend both
Thursday and Saturday ses
sions; all who prefer night or
week-end duly are expected (o
attend the Saturday session
only.
The opportunity to join Su
burban Hospital's Gray Lady
corps is extended only once each
year. The group serving there
originated in May 1952 with six
teen members, and now num
bers seventy-two.
The Gray Ladies work one
day a week, from 9 to 4, or, if
on the evening shift, from 6 to
8 or 7 to 10. They assist the
nursing staff and the patients
by performing numerous small
but vital tasks, such as sorting
mail, making beds, feeding and
visiting patienls, running er
rands for them, and otherwise
ministering to their general
comfort.
The familiar gray uniforms,
from which the organization de
rives its name, are purchased
through the American Red
Cross, which sponsors the corps
nationally.
Length of service is recog
nized by awards including a
stripe for each year, a chevron
for four years, and pins which
mark completion of five and
ten-year periods. Mrs. Jane
Sawtelle of Bethesda is chair
man of the Montgomery County
Gray Lady Volunteers.

The booklet, an A-B-C of au
tomatic photography, is de
signed to show amateurs how
successful photography can be
when the picture-taker doesn’t
have to bother with light
meters and other gadgets.

the National 4-H Center in
Washington Is Arthur H. Biggs,
Jr., of Annapolis, Md.
The appointment was an
nounced by Grant A. Shrum, ex
ecutive director of the National
4-H Club Foundation, which op

the nation's 2,300,000 4-H Club
members.
